When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington.

While the subject matter is extremely important and real, I felt like there was nothing g but character development in this book. I kept trying to plod through it but it was not deep or layered with a good plot, just really well developed characters. Not a page Turner.

This novel touched me on so many levels; as a professional in the domestic violence sector, as a woman, as a humanitarian and as a mother. I found reasons to disengage from other activities so I could come back and listen to the story. I found it to be a powerful story line.

For once women are not saved by a man. They are strong individuals that overcome stuff that we hold onto, until we truly mature.
