Another interesting and well researched title coming from the Great Courses. As I tend to say with any review on a great course, if this subject matter interest you, you will definitely enjoy this production. In fact, I had no particular interest in Japan myself, but still found it engaging and informative. Recommended.

I'm always hesitant to start another soul wrenching book about the holocaust, as I have already read more than a few. However, nothing is more beautiful than the love of a mother, and these stories show just that despite the brutish savagery of the Nazis. In an age where we treat the unborn like commodities to be kept or discarded depending on our personal desires, this story is a refreshing reminder that what a mother undergoes for the benefit of her child is overwhelmingly touching and profound. These moving tales of heroism reminded me to thank and love my own mother.

This novel describes the travails of a young set of brothers and the strife that may arise within a small community shaken by the ravages of death. It is a poignant reflection on the end of human life and the grief that can alter our otherwise stable and predictable reality.

While I first shied away from this title fearing it to be either too "simplistic" or too pessimistic in its take on the world, I was delightfully surprised by its depth. The writing itself is stylish and engaging; the characters are memorable and human. Likewise, the story portrays a plausible future of humanity that is rife with delightful comic relief. The portrayal of Catholicism in this book is not imbued with an overly positive Catholic sentiment, but reveals all the same the heart of the Church for what it really is and how this is expressed in a world that is volatile. What we receive is a Church with all her zits, yet filled with mysterium and mission.

The theme of this book is not immediately apparent and its content is mysterious and just a little haunting. While I couldn't develop a clear thesis on what I just read, I can't help but think about it obsessively, like a bystander who just watched a school bus of children get narrowly missed by a semi in an intersection. The writing in this book is superb, and its imagery riveting. It's not the "feel good" book of the century, but it will make you reflect on a great deal.

While I definitely did not agree with every point put forward in this book, I found the author's obsession with tidying to be eminently captivating. Like anyone who has set their mind upon one thing alone for an entire lifetime, she has a great many useful insights into organizing your life's belongings. Kondo illustrates beautifully the need to discard or give away that which clutters our lives. What she neglects, however, is the equally important necessity of developing our character so as to not pine after useless goods in the first place. I see how organizing has a direct impact on our well being, and Kondo rightly points this out. However, just as true happiness can never be found in the perfect purchase, so it is that true happiness will never be found in the perfectly organized space. Something more is needed, and I'm not sure that this comes across in the book. All in all, very much worth reading.

Interesting and well put together.

Knowledgeable and informative, as you might expect with any good great course. If the subject interests you, this is worth a listen. This is especially true for those who want to know more about developing new systems of learning for any ol' activity: sports practice, reading, mastering a new subject, etc. The hidden gem of this recording is the intro/outro music that is just cheezy enough so as to be entertaining. It provided more laughs for me than the professor. ;)

This book was an easy listen and packed with insightful material. I doubted how useful I would find a book like this written about spoken comedy, but I was delightfully surprised.

The prayer for Owen Meany has a lot going for it. Despite being a little slow at times, the story is interesting and the language of the writer is intelligent and engaging, not to mention, truly funny at certain points. What I find lacking in this story is its account of religion which, for the most part, lacks the vitality or dynamism that would come from a believer. With that said, his account of protestant religion is not totally off, and very interesting to say the least. I enjoyed reading it!
