When Ivan Pritchard signs on as a newbie aboard the Mad Astra, it's his final, desperate stab at giving his wife and children the life they deserve. He can survive the hazing of his crewmates, and how many times, really, can near-zero g make you vomit? But there's another challenge looming out there, in the farthest reaches of human exploration, that will test every man, woman and AI on the ship - and will force Ivan to confront the very essence of what makes him human.

Characters, writing and story: top notch. I absolutely love this series so far. Koontz can do to YA what he does to Horror. Yet at 38, I enjoy both those genres, under his penmanship, quite equally.

There's a bard, a powerful warrior-monk and a toolish girl healer.

Neat wards tho. That's a refreshing take on magic. The various civilizations are a little too close to real-world civs for my taste, mind you, but still. They are well done. Arlin's adoption of the lone wanderer trope after he gets the means to fight the corelings was a bit disappointing, but well anchored in the story nevertheless.

I'll keep listening.
