With unforgettable characters, a sweeping backdrop, and passionate storytelling, this is a fantasy debut to rival that of Robert Jordan. Filled with adventure and bloodshed, pageantry and piracy, mystery and menace, Assassin's Apprentice is the story of a royal house and the young man who is destined to chart its course through tempests of change.

The first 3 chapters were so slow I almost gave up on the book. Then it picked up and was quite interesting.
Overall a good book, but the bitterness and senseless cruelty of those around the protagonist make it quite depressing to listen to.

The story is set in current times or perhaps near future in Chicago. As such you would expect characters to speak or act like we do.
However the dialog is written in a very unrealistic and unbelieble manner. Destroys the suspension of disbelief.
It became very hard to listen to, as characters had unreasonable reactions and unrealistic conversations. Had to stop part way through.
Very disappointing since I'm a big fan of Brandon Sanderson. Listened to most of his fantasy books, but seems like he's got a long way to go before writing a good SciFi novel.

The elite crew of the pirate ship UNS Flying Dutchman had a simple mission: determining whether the Thuranin are sending another starship to Earth. Along the way, they became sidetracked by securing a future for the UNEF troops on the planet Paradise. When asked whether Earth was now safe, their ancient alien AI responded "Not so much"...now they have to deal with the consequences.

Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise, and he's going to keep it: taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.

After gaining access to the advanced Ai, no problem seems challenging. So there's never any real possibility of failure. In fact they have the happiest of endings.
The book also keeps repeating itself. E.g: it mentions that special forces soldiers are amazing and get bored easily several times, other simple concepts are repeated several times in chapters.

The next challenge is growth - to achieve the financial returns and, more importantly, the impact they dreamed of when starting off on their adventure.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Too long and slow. Characters do not grow over the length of journey but rather suddenly without any reason start having tremendous powers.
The main cast all end up with some special ability, even though in the lore of the world those abilities are super rare...
