George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

It took us a while, but here we are... new speak... news peak... peak news, uninformed mes and yous, living off outrage-juice. What a story he brews; my faith in us is bruised, but if you think it's ever gonna break, you don't think true. I love you, dear reader, and there are only ever 4 lights, plus the ideas in your heart/mind are SO bright. It's our life, it's your life, add a y/why and see your free spirit fly with us (there's no "them")... and this guy. <3

The examples given, as well as the explicit explanations of the various aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy discussed in this book, have made me want to give it a listen through another time, taking notes. I say that because I was basically half listening to it while moving into a new place, and my understanding of the things holding us back in life was still noticeably improved.

For good f***ing's sake, just be honest to people you fuck about who you fuck, if they would like to know that info (a preference which you should already have asked about, tactfully. Yes it is difficult to do well).

Don't forget to keep 'em gloves on, and get tested.

Variation in audio quality was a minor gripe of mine.

Most historians study the smallest slivers of time, emphasizing specific dates, individuals, and documents. But what would it look like to study the whole of history, from the big bang through the present day - and even into the remote future? How would looking at the full span of time change the way we perceive the universe, the earth, and our very existence? These were the questions David Christian set out to answer when he created the field of "Big History", the most exciting new approach to understanding where we have been, where we are, and where we are going.

using unfamiliar language to describe very familiar phenomena makes this book a very effective way to gain perspective on things most of us probably think about daily.
