I went further into detail in my review for the sequel as I prematurely bought it while only partway into this story but I will summarize my thoughts below:

I found all of the characters once they left their hometown to be very one dimensional (Good, bad etc). As well I found the overall story arc to be incredibly predictable with none of the plot points being surprises or new as I felt they were all just rehashes from other successful fantasy stories.

Overall I found it to be an interesting concept (a Hero's Journey will always get me as a good hook with a call to action) but overall it was quite disappointing. I will stick to Craig's Sci-Fi stories from now on.

The story was very bland and Predictable

I downloaded this book while still only in the first part of Book 1 as it intrigued me to the story. It wasn't until thew second half of the first book that the simplistic story telling and the use of one dimensional characters started to show and bother me.

But since I had bought the second book and read so many good reviews praising the series I decided to continue. I made it ~75% of the way through book 2 before I had to give up on it. In this book I have not read about a single character that interests me beyond their first introduction. There are the bad guys (who are bad just because....) and the good guys (who the good guy thinks are bad because he keeps overhearing partial conversations very conveniently). It is very frustrating to listen about how smart and great a protectionist is and then have him jump to a ridiculous conclusion in the very next scene because he overheard a conveniently small part of a conversation.

The only upside I found to listening to these stories (besides the voice acting which was well done) was that I bought/downloaded the Lord of the Rings trilogy to compare the storytelling (I had read it years ago and held it in a very high regard). Doing so I was able to confirm that it wasn't a genre issue that caused me to dislike this story which i was worried I may have grown out of it, but a specific issue with this Series.

I know it's not fair to compare this story to LOTR but even compared to other less know Fantasy stories I find it doesn't hold up well. If I had to describe it with one word I would use: Simple.

As well I did enjoy Expeditionary Force (Same author) quite a bit so I was surprised that I found this story so off putting.

Good story that hooks you quickly but I found the series got better and better as the characters developed throughout the series. In this book they do stay relatively one dimensional. But overall a great story. #Audible1

Voice actors changed back and forth many times

This audio book was ruined for me due to the voice actors changing back and forth every couple of chapters making it hard to pin down and understand which of the oddly named characters were which. I'm not saying the names were the issue as I believe if the voices stayed consistent then I would have had an easier time following along.

Great end to a great story

Doesn’t disappoint. Great final segment wrapping up what was a well written story. Also ~60hrs is an incredible length for a story like this it it never feels drawn out or has unnecessary filler.

Great continuation of the story

From the first book starting with very one dimensional characters the story has come a long way fleshing them out properly.

Interesting concept, poor characters and plot

Although the story was written within a very compelling world I found the story and characters quite dull. Beyond the characters being one dimensional the plot seemed to be full of ridiculously convenient plot devices and tropes.
