Publisher's Summary

A "captivating and bittersweet" novel by the number-one New York Times best-selling author of Summer of '69: Their secret love affair has lasted for decades - but this could be the summer that changes everything (People).

When Mallory Blessing's son, Link, receives deathbed instructions from his mother to call a number on a slip of paper in her desk drawer, he's not sure what to expect. But he certainly does not expect Jake McCloud to answer. It's the late spring of 2020 and Jake's wife, Ursula DeGournsey, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Presidential election.

There must be a mistake, Link thinks. How do Mallory and Jake know each other?

Flash back to the sweet summer of 1993: Mallory has just inherited a beachfront cottage on Nantucket from her aunt, and she agrees to host her brother's bachelor party. Cooper's friend from college, Jake McCloud, attends, and Jake and Mallory form a bond that will persevere - through marriage, children, and Ursula's stratospheric political rise - until Mallory learns she's dying.

Based on the classic film Same Time Next Year (which Mallory and Jake watch every summer), 28 Summers explores the agony and romance of a one-weekend-per-year affair and the dramatic ways this relationship complicates and enriches their lives, and the lives of the people they love.

Wasted 15 hours

I kept waiting for it to get better. Overall not a terrible book but the climax didn’t happen until the last few sentences and then it dropped off a cliff. Disappointed.

Liberal propaganda. Skip it.

Just a platform for the author’s political agenda hidden in a romantic novel. Who needs it? Do not recommend this one. Awful.

Don't waste your time

This story line and characters are just flat and one dimensional. The plot is a good idea which is what made me want to read in the first place but the plot drags on for so long and is quite boring. The characters lack depth and their personal stories lines just aren't exciting at the end of the day, I feel like I was always waiting for something to happen and it just didn't. The pop culture references are okay I suppose but a lot of them don't have anything to do with the plot line (with the except of a few which are integrated in the story line) I would have preferred that the time reviewing what happened in that year be spent elaborating on the characters a bit more or at the very least, making the story more interesting. I could see this being a decent beach read but I really wouldn't recommend it or consider reading it again.

Good narrator, sorry was unlikeable

The good: well written, good pace, interesting walk through recent-past pop culture. Narration was spot on.

The bad: characters lacked depth, it was difficult to relate to them because their decision making skills were poor. Flawed characters are interesting and relatable. Stupid ones, not so much.

The ugly: weak, shallow, unlikable main characters

All that I needed

Great book well read. At first, I wasn’t sure I would buy this book based on the description. I am so happy I did ! It’s filled with simple joys, sun, beach, friendship, real love in a world where we have to make the most of every day. Thank you Elin !

Another Great Book by Elin Hilderbrand

I really enjoyed this book. It was a different story unique from her other books. The narration was lovely. Each new chapter was a new year. A nice touch was a listing of key historic and culture items significant to that year.

Wasnt Too Impressed

The characters in this story drove me nuts. Lots of poor decision making. I dont want to say too much details about the ending to spoil it for others, but I found it rushed. As much as the characters annoyed me, I still found myself wanting to know what happens next.

Disappointing and unpleasant

I didn't like any of the characters in this book. Not one. We read this for our book club and it was a unanimous d. N. F for most of us.

A great story

A wonderful story of a mad love affair. Sad ending and sad that Jake couldn’t man-up to leave his wife for his soul mate. Sad that Malerie could not find any other to fill the void. Now…onto book #2
