Publisher's Summary

The most violent thunderstorm in living memory occurs above a sleepy village on the West Coast of Scotland. A young couple take shelter in the woods, never to be seen again....

DCI Jack Russell is brought in to investigate. Nearing retirement, he agrees to undertake one last case, which he believes can be solved as a matter of routine. But what Jack discovers in the forest leads him to the conclusion that he is following in the footsteps of a psychopath who is just getting started.

Hard to understand

Why did so many characters have to be included in soooooo much detail? This made the whole thing overly long. The description blurb was misleading imho. The narrator tried way too hard to sound dramatic in rather a monotonous voice. None of the characters seem to have had any redeeming qualities whatsoever and a lot of them were just window dressing.

I loved it

I know a few people didn’t like his narration but I think the idioms/charm would have been lost without it! Can’t wait to read (hear) more!

didn't see that coming

I gave it a four, even though the ending kind of ruined it for me.
An intricate plot with many intertwining stories and a large cast of generally unlikable but not completely irredeemable characters. It really was nothing like I've read before, at least in terms of structure and how it was all put together. I appreciated that. The author narrates, and he tried his best, but his voice was not exactly compelling. I found my concentration drifting sometimes because he was so sedate in his speech. It wasn't terrible, but not great.
That ending, though. It didn't quite come out of nowhere, there were possible clues (it seemed like every single character was an unreliable narrator, so it was hard to tell what was a clue and what wasn't), but it just felt so cheap. The main villain, we discover in the last chapter, is comically diabolical. And it ends on a big ol' cliffhanger.
In spite of my gripes, it still deserves a solid four stars for good writing and inventiveness.

Holy Crow.! Do Not Miss This One!

I almost dismissed this audiobook as a seaside S cottish seaside village cozy mystery with a thunderstorm for drama.
Hohum! However I stuck with it a little longer, and was really riveted to my chair, listening as a parade of eccentric, villagers appeared. Each one contributes to the tale, but in most unexpected, twists and turns. I have seldom met a more, cunning, yet so ordinary literary villain, so reasonable, but so deadly! The local police are not the village coppers you would expect. They have their motives, their ambition that fuels the tale as well. The village seems so l9vely nestled next to a large forest, but beware. Hurry, Mr. Skewis, gives more stories about DI Jack, about to retire. This is a stand out book!

a bit longer than it needed to be

was a very good story with interesting characters but felt it dragged at times and could be a bit repetitive.

Such a Dark Tale

Intriguing, surprisingly captivating. On the surface a simple crime novel but then layer upon layer of strangeness and twists propel the plot into ever darkening tunnels where the expected is shadowed, erased, and there emerges the unexpected.
There is a strangeness in the plot that makes it very compelling.
The narrator/author does an excellent job.
