Publisher's Summary

Thorne Manor has always been haunted...and it has always haunted Bronwyn Dale. As a young girl, Bronwyn could pass through a time slip in her great-aunt's house, where she visited William Thorne, a boy her own age, born two centuries earlier. After a family tragedy, the house was shuttered and Bronwyn was convinced that William existed only in her imagination.

Now, 20 years later Bronwyn inherits Thorne Manor. And when she returns, William is waiting.

William Thorne is no longer the boy she remembers. He’s a difficult and tempestuous man, his own life marred by tragedy and a scandal that had him retreating to self-imposed exile in his beloved moors. He’s also none too pleased with Bronwyn for abandoning him all those years ago.

As their friendship rekindles and sparks into something more, Bronwyn must also deal with ghosts in the present version of the house. Soon she realizes they are linked to William and the secret scandal that drove him back to Thorne Manor. To build a future, Bronwyn must confront the past.

Great premise but did not deliver

Please note I have never reviewed a book before, but I was so dismayed by this one I felt compelled to.

Having recently read a number of Jane Austen and Bronte novels, I was thrilled to find A Stitch in Time. From all the glowing reviews, I expected a masterfully written novel.

The first third of the book was promising. The author spends some time developing the main character, and I expected some substance to the development of the relationship between the 21st century female lead and her 19th century gentleman.

I was sorely disappointed.

Instead of the development of a genuine relationship between the two characters, it descended right away into a Harlequin romance. I can enjoy a steamy sex scene in a novel, but in this one all of the sexual content felt distasteful and out of place. Half of their dialogue/exchanges consists of him wanting to see her in more revealing modern clothing, and overt references to sex.
For a gentleman of his time, any behavior even slightly approaching this would be totally appalling. Akin to, say, a lecherous old man creeping on a prepubescent girl in our time.
It just all felt horribly wrong and distinctly unromantic.

Despite all this sexual content, the chemistry between them felt completely forced.
The heroine has a lackluster personality. I really had no sense of why he would have loved her. I would have much preferred the author showed us what it was he adored about her, besides her breasts!

As for the ghostly mystery part, it was ok, although somewhat confusing and with inconsistencies. Unfortunately the heroine seemed only mildly interested in it herself, and doesn't show much presence of mind or resolve to deal with it until the very end.

The narration is ok, but the nasally/gravely voice the narrator affects for William really does nothing to help with the impression of him being a creepy old man.

Perhaps I would not have been so disappointed in this book if I hadn't been recently reading Austen and Bronte, but I really struggled to enjoy this.

Another amazing story and great narration

I am so sad to be finishing another Kelley Armstrong story. This story has love, sensuality, paranormal activity and all the strings tied up at the end. Great job by Samantha as well.

Highly recommend

If you weren’t into time travel romance before, you will be now. The actress reads this perfectly. The storyline is fantastic. The characters are great. Highly recommend! Light historic romance for the win!

Enjoyable!

I’m not one for romances but I very much enjoyed this novel. It’s a nice summer listen, which made me smile and at times, laugh. Very much recommend if you’re in the mood for a fun, romantic story.

Loved the characters

I enjoyed this novel very much. A little slow at first and not the usual I listen to but was a fun change for me. The narrator is excellent!

Should come with liberalism warning

Two minutes in and I’m bombarded with liberal ideology and “proper pronoun” usage. Checks out that the character is a U of T professor. Can’t roll my eyes enough. Not what I was expecting based on the genre.
