Description

A number one Sunday Times best seller transformed into an illuminating, dynamic audiobook.

What happens when you take on the establishment? In Adults in the Room, renowned economist and former finance minister of Greece Yanis Varoufakis gives the full, blistering account of his momentous clash with the mightiest economic and political forces on earth.

After being swept into power with the leftwing Syriza party, Varoufakis attempts to renegotiate Greece's relationship with the EU - and sparks a spectacular battle with global implications. Varoufakis' new position sends him ricocheting between mass demonstrations in Athens, closed-door negotiations in drab EU and IMF offices, and furtive meetings with power brokers in Washington, DC. He consults and quarrels with Barack Obama, Emmanuel Macron, Christine Legarde, the economists Larry Summers and Jeffrey Sachs, and others as he struggles to relieve Greece's debt crisis without resorting to punishing austerity measures. But, despite the mass support of the Greek people and the simple logic of Varoufakis' arguments, he succeeds only in provoking the fury of Europe's elite.

Varoufakis' unvarnished memoir is an urgent warning that the economic policies once embraced by the EU and the White House have failed - and spawned authoritarianism, populist revolt, and instability throughout the Western world. Adults in the Room is an extraordinary tale of brinkmanship, hypocrisy, collusion, and betrayal that will shake the global establishment to its foundations.

A must-listen for anyone interested in current events and the delicate web of global economics.

Absolutely brilliant! A must read for all students of political economy

Superb and more relevant today than ever before when juxtaposed against the saga of Brexit. A tour de force in the genre and a fly on the wall thriller.

A Lesson In Human Self Interest

This read was a confirmation of the slings and arrows I face in the midst of activism regarding rapacious economics and the forces of industry that exploit civic and national artists. As Hannah Arendt wrote, ‘There is a great difference between entertainment and culture’. One commodifies, lacking consequential edification and is quickly discarded. The other, however, is instructive, virtuous, reflective of civil life and lasts well into antiquity. There are far greater exigencies that we, a species endowed with responsibility, opportunity and agency, need to wrestle with and should we tarry, subdue. But, our wholesale desecration of the sacred, discarnate and altogether necessary components of human nature and experience, has left us not only wanting but most agreeably, will lead us to the nihilistic ends of our ignorant construction. Truly sad is our refusal to acknowledge the recurring, existential theme that cryptically beckons us toward low-resolution imitations and lecherous chimeras. ‘A riddle, wrapped in mystery, inside an enigma’ belongs not to the individual but to an entire species. We either shall rise above this recrudescence or, we simply shall not. Thank you for the education, Mr. Varoufakis!

Modern Day Economic Horror Genre

Spells out well the horrors of run away government spending. Ironically the author doesn’t seem to learn that lesson himself and succeeds only in 550 pages of self pity.

Flabbergasting, well written, important

When you feel a little lost about the economics in the middle, stick with it anyway. You will still get the essence of the book, which an uncommonly clear picture of the struggle of our times.
