Story
More than half a century ago, the naturalist Farley Mowat accepted an assignment to investigate why wolves were killing Arctic caribou. Mowat’s account of the summer he lived in the frozen tundra alone – studying the wolf population and developing a deep affection for these wild creatures (who were no threat to caribou or man) – is today celebrated as a classic of nature writing, at once a tale of remarkable adventure and an indelible record of the myths and magic of wolves.

At the age of 22, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in postwar London’s East End slums. The colorful characters she met while delivering babies all over London - from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lived to the woman with 24 children who couldn't speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city’s seedier side - illuminate a fascinating time in history.

Publisher's Summary
Find All Creatures Great and Small: The Warm and Joyful Memoirs of the World's Most Beloved Animal Doctor, read by Nicholas Ralph, star of the new PBS Masterpiece series, on Audible.
These are the stories that catapulted James Herriot to literary fame. When this book was first published, it was a simple volume of memoirs by an unknown Scottish veterinarian. But within a year, the book became recognized as a masterpiece. And in the two and a half decades that followed, Dr. Herriot became one of the most universally loved authors of our time.
In this first volume of his memoirs, then-newly-qualified vet James Herriot arrives in the small Yorkshire village of Darrowby, and he has no idea what to expect. How will he get on with his new boss? The local farmers? And what will the animals think? This program is filled with hilarious and touching tales of the unpredictable Siegfried Farnon, his charming student brother, Tristan, and Herriot's first encounters with a beautiful girl named Helen.
Now as then, All Creatures Great and Small is full of humor, warmth, pathos, drama, and James Herriot's love of life. His journey across the Yorkshire dales, and his encounters with humans and dogs, cows and kittens, are lovingly told by Christopher Timothy with all the fascination, affection and joy that suffuses Dr. Herriot's works.
What the critics say
"One of the funniest and most likeable books around." (Atlantic Monthly)
"If there is any justice, All Creatures Great and Small will become a classic of its kind....With seemingly effortless art, this man tells his stories with perfect timing and optimum scale. Many more famous authors could work for a lifetime and not achieve more flawless literary control." (Chicago Tribune Book World)
"Herriot charms because he delights in life, embraces it with sensitivity and gust, and writes with grace. All Creatures Great and Small may well be the happiest book of the year." (The New York Times Book Review)
Editorial Review
Follow Scottish veterinarian James Herriot’s debut memoir in this audiobook version of the classic All Creatures Great and Small. From kittens and dogs to cows and horses to assorted humans, each tale is unique, and full of warmth and charm. One of the most beloved and enduring memoir collections, All Creatures Great and Small weaves tales of animals of all kinds and sizes with small-town anecdotes that highlight the goodness of human nature. This heartwarming audiobook will delight and inspire listeners of all ages. Scottish veterinarian James Herriot recounts stories from his early years working with and treating animals, both in professional settings and chance encounters in his wanderings across the English countryside. A compilation of endearing animal tales and fascinating veterinary case studies, All Creatures Great and Small is equally a love letter to the small Yorkshire village of Darrowby where he began his practice. Beautiful descriptions of rolling moors and expansive dales are paired with humour and small-town English charm. Listeners will love these sweet and funny tales, which highlight the innocence of animals, the kindness of strangers, and the reality of the circle of life. Christopher Timothy lends his voice to this audiobook, comfortably slipping into the narration, having played the role of Dr. Herriot in a BBC adaptation of his memoirs. This affection for the author shines through in the audio, making it easy for listeners to immediately connect with James Herriot and experience the joy he derives from his work.

TIMELESS❤
I read this book and all of James Herriot other books when I was a teenager. I loved them then, and I love them now.
It is a beautifully written story, or actually many stories, and the narrator does an outstanding job.
I cannot recommend more highly! Not many books get 5 out of 5 from me!

One of My Favourites, Beautifully Performed
My mom bought me the special edition of this book when I was in elementary school that had photographs of Yorkshire and illustrations of various breeds of cattle, sheep and pigs. It made me want to be a farm vet until I actually thought about what it meant. Revisiting the stories in audiobook format was an absolute treat. It was even funnier than I remember and it still makes me want to be a vet - or maybe just to visit. Highly recommended, especially as a pre-holiday de-stressor.

Slice of life full of charm
one complaint is if you fall asleep while listening its hard to find where you left off bc the book is full of short stories that aren't connected or have lasting character development.
That being said, it a wonderful book were you will fall in love with the secondary character as you get a glimpse into there lifes. These characters love there animals and it can bc rollcoster of emotions when the vet delivers a cow or has to put down a beloved dog. if you love animals the emotions the clients experience is incredibly relateable and you can empathize easily.
