Publisher's Summary

The Sunday Times top 10 best seller

Was an advanced civilisation lost to history in the global cataclysm that ended the last Ice Age? Graham Hancock, the internationally best-selling author, has made it his life's work to find out - and in America Before, he draws on the latest archaeological and DNA evidence to bring his quest to a stunning conclusion.

We've been taught that North and South America were empty of humans until around 13,000 years ago - amongst the last great landmasses on earth to have been settled by our ancestors. But new discoveries have radically reshaped this long-established picture and we know now that the Americas were first peopled more than 130,000 years ago - many tens of thousands of years before human settlements became established elsewhere.

Hancock's research takes us on a series of journeys and encounters with the scientists responsible for the recent extraordinary breakthroughs. In the process, from the Mississippi Valley to the Amazon Rainforest, he reveals that ancient 'New World' cultures share a legacy of advanced scientific knowledge and sophisticated spiritual beliefs with supposedly unconnected 'Old World' cultures. Have archaeologists focused for too long only on the 'Old World' in their search for the origins of civilisation while failing to consider the revolutionary possibility that those origins might in fact be found in the 'New World'?

America Before: The Key to Earth's Lost Civilisation is the culmination of everything that millions of people have loved in Hancock's body of work over the past decades, namely a mind-dilating exploration of the mysteries of the past, amazing archaeological discoveries and profound implications for how we lead our lives today.

What the critics say

"Hancock's books provide a fascinating, alternative version of prehistory. America Before, detailed and wide-ranging, turns what was myth and legend into a new story of the past." (Daily Mail)

this is a review by Travis R Willier

This was by far the best audio book I've listened to in my life, the information was clear and easy to understand and above all else it was read by the author himself which gave this audio version of the book an amazing grounded feel, that captivates and gravitates you in and tells the tale of the ancients in a beautiful masterful way! Amazing!

Interesting

He had me right up until he opined that ancient people used psychic powers to build the pyramids.

Decolonizing History

A fresh perspective on not only our history but on the continued historical influences shaping that history. Excellent.

not for everyone, but interesting for sure

Many chapters go in very precise details about archeological findings and measurements, sometimes not always very easy to follow. I would have kept these specific notes inside a scientific study instead of a general knowledge book. All in all very interesting take and views about the history of man kind plus a good jab at the hard headed / lobby focused archeological community.

Solid info but.......

I've enjoyed Hancock's research for many years. If you've followed these topics at all, not a lot here will surprise you. Hancock does a very good job of tying together all of these various strands. He also does yeoman's work as a narrator. Very good.

What spoiled it a bit, for me anyways, was his tendency towards preachiness at the end of the book. (No oil means no economy and no pipelines means no oil, Graham. Grow up.) That coupled with his extremely naive schoolboy view of native Americans was pretty off-putting for me. YMMV.

Goes too far in some places

Goes too far new-agey in some places, but the underlying premise of a pre-ice age culture in the Americas is intriguing and thought provoking. Hancock possesses a truely amazing and engaging storytelling style. While I didn't agree with some of the more 'out there' comments, I did enjoy this book immensely.

Excellent historical facts

The sheer amount of indisputable evidence in this book is remarkable! It really goes to show we know nothing of our past. The history books have it wrong.
