Description

Odd-mannered, obsessive, withdrawn, Aster has little to offer folks in the way of rebuttal when they call her ogre and freak. She's used to the names; she only wishes there was more truth to them. If she were truly a monster, as they accuse, she'd be powerful enough to tear down the walls around her until nothing remained of her world, save for stories told around the cookfire.

Aster lives in the low-deck slums of the HSS Matilda, a space vessel organized much like the antebellum South. For generations the Matilda has ferried the last of humanity to a mythical Promised Land. On its way the ship's leaders have imposed harsh moral restrictions and deep indignities on dark-skinned sharecroppers like Aster, whom they consider to be less than human.

When the autopsy of Matilda's sovereign reveals a surprising link between his death and her mother's suicide some quarter century before, Aster retraces her mother's footsteps. Embroiled in a grudge with a brutal overseer and sowing the seeds of civil war, Aster learns there may be a way off the ship if she's willing to fight for it.

Depressing...

A bit depressing... lots of abuse and racism. Performance by reader helped me to finish the story.

Great reading but characters and story slip a bit

The naration was excellent but I found that the characters not to be too strong and the story seemed weak in a couple spots. still a fun story though overall and very original.

fantastic narration

I was hooked in the first few minutes, never wanting to stop but pausing now and again anyway because I didn't want it to end! I loved the exploration of the futuristic communities and subcultures within. The narrator was especially excellent, giving each characters different accents according to their place on the ship. There were a couple places where time skips ahead in the story and I wished the author had filled in a bit more. But perhaps this was to help the pace along as it starts out slow and steady but races at the end. All in all, I loved it and am looking forward to more from this author.

An interesting book

An interesting take on gender, sexuality and race in a sci-fi setting. At times I found the story dragged a little and the narration was a little flat, but overall the story was an interesting listen and certainly a unique character driven story. Worth the listen.

Not For Me

DNF @ 14%

I have this as an audiobook. I have started it from the beginning at least 5 times because I found myself tuning out. I listened to the part about the foot amputation at least 5 times and still couldn't tell you anything about it. I know there was pronoun usage of "they" (that the main character stumbled through...) and that this was obviously diverse. But the story line, narrator, and just general tone of the story was not for me.

The War Between the Decks

All happy Generation Ships are the same.

Every unhappy Generation Ship is unhappy in a unique way.

The HSS Matilda was not a happy ship.

With a class structure divided by race, bad things are bound to happen. They do.

A refreshing tale of non-binary protagonists

A lot of the reviews here touch very eloquently on the very obvious and painful discriminatory themes, but one thing I absolutely hungered for more of was Theo's non-binary identity. He straddles in-between worlds with how he chooses to navigate gender and I found him gorgeous. I'd read a whole book about him and Aster.

I also loved the tight-knit communal aspects of various lower-deck cultures. Everything from their patois, to the food; beautiful descriptions of flavour that call to me as a person in the Caribbean diaspora, These people are not a monolith by any means. There's plenty of pain in this book but some very tender moments too.

More non-binary characters please!

amazing performance

This was a good, though very difficult read; the voice actor was particularly excellent!! The horror of the lives of the lower deck people.

Absolutely amazing book (Spoiler alert)

A postapoccaliptic story with a twist, beautifully written and performed with wonderful skill and feeling. The author pulls no punches, flinches from nothing in order to tell an all too possible story of a generation ship traveling for hundreds of years towards a new beginning. Not for the squeemish, but an engaging read (listen) for sure. Strong female characters being pushed to the limits of their ability to endure and survive, evil villains taking advantage of downtrodden folk, and sympathetic help from unexpected sources. A warning about badly things could go wrong for such an endeavor, and a metaphor for America, especially now in 2020. I was entranced through every minute of it. I want more. I had never encountered Rivers Solomon before, but I will definitely look for more by them now.

Stunning!

This book discusses the age old existence of the ugliness of racism, class division, homophobia and slavery, to name a few. It also discusses how there are always strong, brilliant and courageous people who will fight and rise above it. I love the characters in the book especially Aster, Theo and even Giselle.I love that this story is told in such a unique way. All the characters, the last of humanity, are on a spaceship bound for ‘paradise. The upper decks are for the ‘elite’ and the lower decks are for the ‘slaves’. It’s raw and gritty but also beautiful. I’m about to listen from the start again!
