Description

Nineteen-year-old Greg Sestero met Tommy Wiseau at an acting school in San Francisco. Wiseau's scenes were rivetingly wrong, yet Sestero, hypnotized by such uninhibited acting, thought, "I have to do a scene with this guy." That impulse changed both of their lives. Wiseau seemed never to have read the rule book on interpersonal relationships (or the instructions on a bottle of black hair dye), yet he generously offered to put the aspiring actor up in his LA apartment. Sestero's nascent acting career first sizzled, then fizzled, resulting in Wiseau's last-second offer to Sestero of co-starring with him in The Room, a movie Wiseau wrote and planned to finance, produce, and direct - in the parking lot of a Hollywood equipment-rental shop.

Wiseau spent $6 million of his own money on his film, but despite the efforts of the disbelieving (and frequently fired) crew and embarrassed (and frequently fired) actors, the movie made no sense. Nevertheless, Wiseau rented a Hollywood billboard featuring his alarming headshot and staged a red carpet premiere. The Room made $1,800 at the box office and closed after two weeks. One reviewer said that watching The Room was like "getting stabbed in the head".

The Disaster Artist is Greg Sestero's laugh-out-loud funny account of how Tommy Wiseau defied every law of artistry, business, and friendship to make "the Citizen Kane of bad movies" (Entertainment Weekly), which is now an international phenomenon, with Wiseau himself beloved as an oddball celebrity. Written with award-winning journalist Tom Bissell, The Disaster Artist is an inspiring tour de force, an open-hearted portrait of an enigmatic man who will improbably capture your heart.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"This downright thrilling book is a lot like watching Tim Burton's Ed Wood: it's sometimes infuriating, often excruciating, usually very funny, and occasionally horribly uncomfortable, but it's also impossible to look away from." ( Booklist, Starred Review)

Humorous and entertaining

I hadn’t heard about The Room prior to listening to this book. But after I’m more intrigued than ever about this movie and also about the Talented Mr. Ripley that this book references every so often. The performance by Greg Sestero is absolutely amazing. He does accent, intonations and adds flavour to the narration. The story itself is very entertaining. Highly recommend for some easy listening that will leave you in splits.

Loved it

A great story about someone will a bit dream. Listen to it if only for Greg's impression of Tommy

This is my favourite audiobook

Absolutely compelling and entertaining listen. Some of you, like myself, have had a relatable experience of being sucked into a strange person’s orbit when starting your life as an independent adult, which will make this book even more of an experience. It’s the kind of book where your left feeling melancholy that it’s ended. Greg’s voice acting is so good and funny. This is a classic piece of non-fiction IMO.

My favourite Audiobook

Best audiobook/story I’ve ever listened to. Phenomenally entertaining, it’s the first time where an audiobook finished and I immediately wanted to restart it. Painfully funny. Greg Sestero, the author, as the narrator of the audiobook is perfection. His impersonation of Tommy is so dead on, it’s as if Tommy is actually there himself throughout the story.

My Life Inside 'The Disaster Artist'

First and foremost, this audiobook would be much less great if Greg Sestero hadn't done his spot-on impression of Tommy Wiseau. It makes it that much more immersive, especially if you've already heard the real Tommy's voice.

My only problem with it (if you can even call it a problem) was the constant switching between the stories of Greg and Tommy's past, and the filming of The Room. While at times it can throw you off the story track, it's kind of an odd yet nice pacing.

An Audible and Entertaining Train Wreck

Terrible movie and so very interesting on how it all came to be. Touching and very human. I found Greg’s narration flat at times, however, when he is imitating Tommy or speaking with empathy about Tommy’s journey, it came alive. I have to see The Disaster Artist now.

Great story performed amazingly by Greg Sestero.

An awesome book. thoroughly entertaining. you don't have to see the Room to appreciate it, but it would certainly help understand the scenes Greg refers to throughout.

Greg "Tommy Wiseau" Sestero

This audio book was a great listen from the first minute to the last. Greg Sestero, costar of The Room, retells his life of trying to make it in Hollywood while also giving us an inside look at the filming of The Room. I am a huge fan of The Room and Tommy Wiseau, so when I came across this while searching in Audible's Library, I had to download it. My excitement was more than surpassed the first time I heard Greg's impression of Tommy. Whether you love/hate or have never heard of The Room, this audio book is for you. Great story with an great performance! #Audible1
