Description

This program is read by the author.

A guide to all kinds of addiction from a star who has struggled with heroin, alcohol, sex, fame, food, and eBay, that will help addicts and their loved ones make the first steps into recovery.

"This manual for self-realization comes not from a mountain but from the mud.... My qualification is not that I am better than you but I am worse." (Russell Brand)

With a rare mix of honesty, humor, and compassion, comedian and movie star Russell Brand mines his own wild story and shares the advice and wisdom he has gained through his 14 years of recovery. Brand speaks to those suffering along the full spectrum of addiction - from drugs, alcohol, caffeine, and sugar addictions to addictions to work, stress, bad relationships, digital media, and fame. Brand understands that addiction can take many shapes and sizes and how the process of staying clean, sane, and unhooked is a daily activity. He believes that the question is not "why are you addicted?" but "what pain is your addiction masking? Why are you running - into the wrong job, the wrong life, the wrong person's arms?"

Russell has been in all the 12-step fellowships going, he's started his own men's group, he's a therapy regular and a practiced yogi - and while he's worked on this material as part of his comedy and previous best sellers, he's never before shared the tools that really took him out of it, that keep him clean and clear. Here he provides not only a recovery plan but an attempt to make sense of the ailing world.

Eye opening!

This book was amazing. By chapter 2 I had identified so much of myself in what Russell was saying. I immediately began self-reflecting nd noticed a big change in my attitude (mostly at work). I'm not an addict in the normal sense but I definitely have addict-like tendencies which come along with the mental disorder I have been trying (nd mostly failing) to maintain all by my lonesome.

I fully intend to immerse myself in some parts, if not all, of this program nd see if I can't find some light at the end of this perpetually dark tunnel. I have always enjoyed Russell's humour nd his wonderful accent nd hearing his version of these 12 Steps (which I was familiar with prior to listening), nd his personal stories, made things clearer for me as I am far from religious nd not at all spiritual.

I recommend this book to anyone who may be struggling with life, not just addiction, but ALL the things life may throw our way. There's no better person than Russell to start this journey with as he can make the bleakest thing comedic nd yet still have you rethinking your own path. I plan on purchasing the physical copy as well so I can desecrate it with highlighters.

Relatable personal recovery experience

I felt Russell's elaboration on the Twelve Steps was a relatable personal recovery experience that I was able to identify with. He also addressed recovery with a real and honest sense of sacredness. I adore him even more.

Only for Russell Brand fans

I read about 2/3 of this book and I did indeed find many valuable gems and memorable moments. But then, I like Russell Brand and his off-kilter persona. None of the concepts in the book were new to me but that didn't bother me; what I like is that this book gives anybody addicted to anything (the internet, food, smoking - whatever) hope and a sense of empowerment. That said, it reads more like a memoir in a way, revealing the touching fact that Brand finally figured out how to make friends and connect to people outside of his industry or his drug use. I found that really touching how he underscores the primacy of friendships - but he acts as if this is a new discovery. I didn't finish the book because - well - I'd had enough. I get it. Maybe I'll return to the book at some point. I do recommend it - but again - only if you really like Brand. If you don't, I'm sure this book would be 100% obnoxious.

This book is for everyone!

Whether you do or do not think you have an addiction - read this book! Because this is for everyone. This is for those who seek balance but are defeated at the end of each day wishing they could just control something or change something so they could feel good. This book is for those who believe they are missing something. Ok I'll quit raving.

In addition to above - it is well written. And who better than Russell Brand to read his own book? It was a pleasure to listen to - I say as I am going to listen to it again.

The 12 steps with guts, brains, heat and soul.

The has to be the best 12 step book I have ever read and, in 35 years of active AA recovery, that is quite a few. Mr. Brand is brutally honest and sincere to a fault. It is so articulately written, that, at times, it reads like a poem. There are many fine stories. wonderful metaphors, funny interludes, and interesting allegories. He reads it as he has lived it and it is a gem.

For anyone who is serious about their recovery buy this book and listen to it more than a few times. Then print out the 12 step notes from his web site and go to work. You will be richly rewarded.

Brutally honest sobriety

Russell used a 12 step program, as have I, to change his life. This book seems to be written to assist people, perhaps skeptics more than anyone, to see what it really is, to remove people’s preconceptions, and encourage the suffering that there is another way to live without their present pain.

This is true. My own experience echos much of this book, and at no point did I find the author going off-message or self-aggrandizing. The fact is, as Russell repeats, addictions to whatever (alcohol, sex, drugs, food, self-harm, etc) are not the problem, but rather a symptom and expression of something deeper. 12 step programs, WHEN FOLLOWED, work amazingly well to get to the root of these issues and free people from suffering, which in turn frees them from their addictive behaviors that result from them.

Audiobook is great, read by Russel with his accent, and accentuation. If you need help, start here, it works.

Absolutely Brilliant!

This book is passionate, practical, honest, and articulate. I had no idea Brand had this within himself.
