Description

Oprah's Book Club Summer 2018 Selection

A powerful, revealing story of hope, love, justice, and the power of reading by a man who spent 30 years on death row for a crime he didn't commit.

“An amazing and heartwarming story, it restores our faith in the inherent goodness of humanity.” (Archbishop Desmond Tutu)

In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only 29 years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free.

But with no money and a different system of justice for a poor Black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution. He spent his first three years on Death Row at Holman State Prison in agonizing silence - full of despair and anger toward all those who had sent an innocent man to his death. But as Hinton realized and accepted his fate, he resolved not only to survive, but find a way to live on Death Row. For the next 27 years he was a beacon - transforming not only his own spirit, but those of his fellow inmates, 54 of whom were executed mere feet from his cell. With the help of civil rights attorney and best-selling author of Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson, Hinton won his release in 2015.

With a foreword by Stevenson, The Sun Does Shine is an extraordinary testament to the power of hope sustained through the darkest times. Destined to be a classic memoir of wrongful imprisonment and freedom won, Hinton’s memoir tells his dramatic 30-year journey and shows how you can take away a man’s freedom, but you can’t take away his imagination, humor, or joy.

This program includes a foreword written and read by Bryan Stevenson.

Heartbreaking

Heartbreaking story. Really made me think hard about my beliefs regarding the death penalty, trust in the legal system and justice. A heavy harrowing and unbelievable miscarriage of justice. I’m glad I listened to it.

A powerful story

Ray Hinton’s story is so remarkable - and unbelievable and so unfortunately believable that it will turn your guts and leave you laying awake at night with the big questions of race and justice and love and hope and death and what a person can endure. His character is one of strength and courage and I am so glad I took the time to hear his voice - his story. Sometimes living in my own privilege The world can become very small. I would recommend this story to anyone.

The Unimaginable becomes Reality

From an unfair, un-win-able trial to a life lost for a crime he didn't commit. This story gripped me from the very first words, right until the end. And I still wanted to know more about the life and times of Ray and the rest on Death Row. Truly a Must Listen To!!

Eye Opener

I ABSOLUTELY loved listening to Anthony Ray Hinton's story about this time on death row and how after 30 plus years he keep his faith and he, or his family, friends, nor his lawyer never waivered about his innocence. I would love to see this become a movie! The novel was so well written and flowed brilliantly. I's definitely recommend this to anyone one that loves when eros triumph in the end. I fought for Anthony through the whole story and could not believe what he and his family were put though. But their faith in God and each other prevailed. I will be listening to this again for sure! #Audible1 - Awesome read!!!

Incredible testament to man’s inhumanity

Reading this book is tough because it makes you confront the inherent wickedness in human beings. Our terrible inhumanity that makes it okay for humans to subject other humans to terrible injustice and yet feel no remorse, no empathy or humility to accept that wrongs were committed. This book is about one man’s hope that lifted him up from misery, but it’s also about the hopelessness of our collective humanity that will forever be tainted by selfishness, greed and pride that makes humans blind to the sufferings of fellow human beings.

Beautiful

I loved this book and recommended it to anyone who would listen to me, and even those who seemed reluctant. I can see why Oprah is such a fan. It was outstanding and part of me didn't want it to end, as much as I wanted it to hurry up and be over so Ray would be free. In Canada we do not have the same racial dynamic, or prejudice, so this is not something I had grown up with, but it broke my heart all the same. Side note: I also used Ray's book club as a reading guide and promptly downloaded Go Tell It On The Mountain.
