Publisher's Summary

In the third book in Ashley Poston’s Once Upon a Con series, Beauty and the Beast is retold in the beloved Starfield universe as bad boy Vance Reigns meets his match in fanfiction writer Rosie Thorne.

Rosie Thorne and her father have been short on luck - and money - for years. So when she loses her grocery store job in a heated moment of smashing the patriarchy, she knows she may be forced to give up on her dream of leaving her small town for a prestigious college creative writing program.

On the other hand, Vance Reigns has been Hollywood royalty for as long as Rosie’s been clipping coupons and secretly writing massively popular fanfiction. When a tabloid scandal catches up to him, he’s forced to hide out somewhere the paparazzi would never expect to find him: Small Town USA.

Rosie and Vance’s paths collide in a chance encounter, and suddenly cataloging the Starfield library at Vance’s manor house is Rosie’s only shot at saving money for school. And while most Starfield superfans would jump at the chance to work in close proximity to Vance, Rosie has realized something about Vance: he’s a huge jerk, and she can’t stand him.

Still, there may be more to Vance than meets the eye. As Rosie and Vance begrudgingly get to know each other, secrets are revealed that could change their minds - and their hearts - forever.

Not good, but that's why it's entertaining

I'm not in the target demographic for this, but I do enjoy a good young adult novel and love fairy tale retellings.

First, I'm not sure where the Beauty & the Beast story was supposed to be, as the love interest is "super hunkin hot" and our heroine's celebrity crush. He does describe his own behaviour as "beastly" as well as his migraine, but we don't really see it, as the heroine is just as much, if not more, unlikable. Her personality is being irresponsible, clumsy, and talking a lot about her deceased mother and deciding her mom is why people don't want to date her. They do throw in random quotes and character names pulled straight from the Disney cartoon, but the point of the fairytale is MIA.

Then we have some continuity issues like Elias saying he is going to the grocery store & inviting Rosie for dinner, then her calling him and being surprised he is at the grocery store, then him returning & being surprised she is still there even though he invited her for dinner. Quite amusing.
It feels like the author threw nerd culture, Disney quotes, LGBTQ+ & fanfiction in a blender & this is what came out. It is so heavy-handed that I questioned whether it was supposed to be a parody of the genre (in which case they should have leaned into it even more) and the characters speak in a way that I have never heard anyone speak.

That being said, I was thoroughly amused because of all of this.
The audio balance between the two narrators is off, but I liked the gal who read for Rosie and downloaded another audiobook with her on it.

Not as good as Geekerella but still cute

This was a good story but didn't have me at the edge of my seat / feeling all the emotions as much as Geekerella. It was cute though. Nice fluffy romance.

Gave up

Got about 5min in and couldn’t take the narration any longer. Very young teenage like voice was not for me. Might be a better fit for a young YA reader. So I pass on this.
