Histoire
Ever since its first publication in 1992, The End of History and the Last Man has provoked controversy and debate. Francis Fukuyama's prescient analysis of religious fundamentalism, politics, scientific progress, ethical codes, and war is as essential for a world fighting fundamentalist terrorists as it was for the end of the Cold War. Now updated with a new afterword, The End of History and the Last Man is a modern classic.
Description
"Candide" is a delightful story filled with boundless misadventure while tackling the great philosophical issues of the Enlightenment era. The story is about Candide, a young man who is the illegitimate nephew of a German baron with whom he resides. When it is discovered he is kissing the baron's beautiful daughter he is thrown from the castle where he experiences the horrors of war, poverty, the maliciousness of man, and the hypocrisy of the church.
Obviously, Voltaire is poking fun at Leibniz, Pope, and others who assail that the world created by God was the best possible of all worlds with perfect order and reason, as spoken through the greatest of all fictional philosophers, Candide's tutor, Pangloss. As you listen to segments of "Candide", take the time to research both the book and Voltaire to gain a richer understanding of the themes interlaced throughout the audiobook.

Exceptionally satirical story - very flawed reading, unfortunately
The story itself is fabulously satirical and really knocks both philosophy and everything else under the sun. And it’s an important part of literary history. But the many pronunciation errors by the reader - including so many that really shouldn’t have been an issue - were distracting and took away from the overall enjoyment of the book. I’d recommend it, but not by this reader. He has a good “voice over” style voice, but the lack of adequate practice shows.

Illustrates the period and Voltaire's wit
This book is beautifully read. Voltaire's trenchant story is full of wit and delicate irony. It was very helpful in understanding Voltaire's point of view, having read before the Black Death. Dorsey Armstrong and Voltaire by Prof Kerr, both courses offered by Audible. I wish I had read this book before.
