Description

Jack's a retired ex-cop from New York, seeking the simple life in Cherringham. Sarah's a Web designer who's moved back to the village to find herself. But their lives are anything but quiet as the two team up to solve Cherringham's criminal mysteries.

This compilation contains episodes 4 - 6: THICK AS THIEVES, LAST TRAIN TO LONDON and THE CURSE OF MABB'S FARM.

Here Jack and Sarah get caught up in a mysterious treasure hunt. They tease out the truth behind the town puppeteer's death, and they're threatened by the ancient curse of a local farm.

Cherringham is a serial novel à la Charles Dickens, with a new mystery thriller released each month. Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing duo: English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick read for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa.

For fans of Agatha Christie's "Miss Marple series", Lilian Jackson Braun's "The Cat Who series", Caroline Graham's "Midsomer Murders", and the American TV series "Murder She Wrote", starring Angela Lansbury.

Co-authors Neil Richards (based in the UK) and Matthew Costello (based in the US), have been writing together since the mid 90's, creating content and working on projects for the BBC, Disney Channel, Sony, ABC, Eidos, and Nintendo to name but a few. Their transatlantic collaboration has underpinned scores of TV drama scripts, computer games, radio shows, and - most recently - the successful crime fiction series Cherringham.

The narrator of the audiobook, Neil Dudgeon, has been in many British television programmes including the roles of "DCI John Barnaby" in "Midsomer Murders" and "Jim Riley" in "The Life of Riley".

Never a dull moment in Cherringham

More intrigue as the sleuths are on the job again. Jack and Sarah make a great team solving crimes that might have gone unpunished or undiscovered otherwise. Love the writing and narration!

Bite-sized PG-13 Mysteries - Growing on me

I'm more of a conventional Mystery fan. I enjoy extensive character development, involved plots, "keep-you-guessing" twists, and tense atmospheres. This series doesn't have the time to accomplish those goals and rather pays close attention to making certain there is bare-bones intrigue with little of the grisly and zero expletives. That renders, in my opinion, a distinct lack of anything viscerally affecting. These short episodes are instead easy-to-consume but notably superficial. The tandem of amateur sleuths in these stories (retired NYPD detective Jack Brennan and divorcée computer programmer Sarah Edwards) are head-shakingly nonsensical in terms of motivation and the neighborly village setting - while relatable - is frankly boring to me.

What the book admirably does provide is distracting, easily-digestible diversions. These are "Prime-Time" quality morsels.. completely appropriate if the audience includes younger listeners (e.g. while driving the kids to school). The transatlantic collaboration of Niel Richards and Matthew Costello is unique - and works really well here. They provide clear plots with an economy of words and write as for a screenplay - the reader can easily visualize the encounters and scenes. At the same time, they tease that there are some fascinating ominous relationships smoldering beneath the veneer of the village of Cherringham - if only they had the time to explore them. The quality of writing is promising.

Niel Dudgeon turns in an average performance reading this recording. His pacing and emotion is fine, but he seems somewhat disinterested and chooses some fairly strong accents - rendering some scenes difficult to follow.

Altogether, I rate this set of "Cosy" mysteries at 4.5 stars out of 10 (a slight improvement over my first introduction). These made-for-TV quickies are not quite to my tastes, but as I get introduced more to the protagonists, I am getting more comfortable in their world.

Very entertaining

These "episodes" of crime stories in Cherringham are really entertaining and I enjoy them immensely. I am always surprised with the ending, which of course in a crime story is always a plus.
The narrator is very good and I am looking forward to listening to the next 3 stories.
