Bad Readers, Interesting stories

The stories are good, but the narrators are horrible. At least one of the narrators doesn't even speak English as his native language and it shows. He speaks well, but his accent and struggle to pronounce some of the words makes it difficult to listen to the stories he reads. Some of the other narrators are so slow and pedantic, you almost fall asleep before getting into the stories. I'm glad I didn't pay much for this audiobook.

Terribly Distracting Narration

I have been an avid Lovecraft fan for decades and will usually listen to or read anything "Lovecraftian" (Derleth, Arkham House, etc.) but this version was just too much. As other reviews have stated, the accents of the narrators just overpowered everything else and pulled you out of the story just to figure out what they were saying. I powered through 5 stories, too, to be sure it wasn't just the first narrator. I know the book has different narrators for different stories, but this felt like one of those free public domain audio books where every chapter has a different person, recorded in a different environment, and none of them were professional.

Unfortunately, as much as I love the genre, I have to give this one a pass.

Some interesting stories; off-putting narration

Some (not all) of the stories are potentially interesting. The style of writing is mostly overdone, that style where the author seems to be trying to prove how many words they know. Much of it takes too long to get to a destination that isn't worthy of the build up.

The dagger is the narration. I am hoping that the goal was to use unusual speech patterns to inject some kind of mood or unsettling effect. Some of the accents are in that direction, but having an Elmer Fudd impersonator narration a horror story is annoying at best and at worst ruins the story. Overall, misses the target in my opinion.

Some readers are rough

Many of the narrators are great but at least one guy has a thick accent which isn't a problem by itself, but the sounds like he is recording with his head in a box. It's so muffled

fuzzy and low voices.

love Lovecraft. however it always seems like the narrators on all the audiobooks of his stories are so unconcerned with tone. everyone is monotonous. makes me sad.

Truly horrible narrations.

[Readers should know that it seems all of these narrations were taken from the public domain as part of the project known as LibriVox. While it is a noble endeavor, it means that any volunteer can record and submit an audio narration of works of literature free of copyright.]

However, you would think that with key works of literature like these, they would still be more picky about who they allowed to narrate. We're talking about narrations done in incongruous (and *very thick*) foreign accents, and narrators who can't pronounce common words like "strength" or "escape", and other glaring and unforgiveable issues with the recordings.

They are free however... So what can you say.

Recording quality gives me recurring nightmares

Ever since I started listening to this audio book, my dreams all carry monotonous voices with hissing noise, aberrant noise behind the voices. It won’t stop! I’m barely clinging to my sanity. Every time I listen, my ears are stricken deaf with the sheer horror of the abyssal, antediluvian quality of the recordings, as though staticy recordings, received through some distant planets broadcast, or the echo of the distress cry of some ancient, lost civilization, desperate for help from the horrors their ambition unleashed on them, and now reflected mockingly off some pitilessly silent creature, hovering over the blue sky, waiting to cleanse our planet for its own dark purposes, as it did to those distant suppliants. I’m only writing this so that you might know how poor the experience is, and save yourself the delay in ending your own life, as I am about to do, for the only escape from the deadly, unstoppable horror that is the recording values for this book.

Seriously. It’s just unfortunately bad. Listened to the first four hours before I realized there are other options. Just don’t.

the reader had an accent the muttered up the words

the Irish speaker made it hard to listen to due to mispronouncing and just a hard accent to understand on the fly
