Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Story
Ranger Quinn thought that morning would be like so many others. A hangover, a day off before going back to work keeping the lower levels of Zion City safe from itself. But a crime so horrific, so brutal in its execution, turns those mundane expectations around. An investigation into the death of a senior leader in their underground utopia safe from the harsh radioactive wastelands beyond their walls forces Quinn beyond that safety and into the world outside.

Story
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Story
More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

Story
My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Publisher's Summary
2019 Independent Audiobook Award Winner for Apocalyptica
Survival can be a lonely existence...or not. The reality of the situation always comes down to a simple decision: What kind of world do you want to build?
The survivors have come to settle in the mountains of Wyoming, fighting day in and day out to establish a home for themselves in a near-empty world. Things are good at first; scavenging is a workable, short-term solution that seems to be providing all they need.
But they know that it’s only a matter of time before the food runs out. They need to scramble to find a sustainable solution before the clock stops, and for a little handful of people up in the mountains, the odds don’t seem very favorable.
Further south, a new band of people migrates across the map, running on fumes and searching desperately for a place to settle. All around them, as resources run thin, the world grows colder and more violent.
It’s getting worse out there, always getting worse, and it’s starting to look like survival might just depend on how violent they’re willing to get....

Entertaining, but...
I’m enjoying this series, and let’s face it, you have to appreciate it for what it is. Is it a little heavy on guns and ammo? Yes, but so are all of these books.
But what I can’t get my head around is with all these so-called smart people that appeared to have thought of nearly everything, there are some obvious things that are overlooked.
Food is continually discussed, but no one seems to be concerned about the lack of medical training amongst the survivors. On the same note, no one mentions gathering medications and such.
Back to food, hunting is briefly mentioned, but no one actually does anything. Even if you have no experience, I would think that deer, elk or whatever foams around Wyoming would be stepping all over each other at the point that this story takes place - it should not take a great deal of skill to shoot something if you can aim and pull a trigger. And what about fishing? Again, not mentioned. And what about scavenging farms? I’m also perplexed about having to go to Nevada for food. Nothing is mentioned about checking food distribution centres (railroad and truck) and other commercial access points.
Last, the septic system. The novel states it will last 40 years. A septic BED *might* last 40 years, but more likely 20. However a septic TANK has to be emptied (depending on size, use) every 18 - 24 months. I also do not understand why they just don’t put in more septic tanks rather than digging outhouses. With diesel fuel, all they need is a backhoe and they could have one put in in 2 days that would service their container houses.
But, then again, what do I know.

Exactly what i wanted!
This sequel is great! I love survival books where the conflict comes more from the environment and surviving and less from other people. The cursing is hilarious and narrators characters are easy to tell apart and accents sound authentic.

Very good
This book is a real step up from book one. The author seem to hit his stride. Basically generic GI Joe action stuff with lots of excerpts from American survivalist handbooks. Falls on its ass with the facts a few times but wtf- it’s fiction. Narration suits perfectly.

Really good sequel!
Excellent series so far! The author has done his homework and R.C Bray is a voice acting genius. Gibbs has me laughing out loud and Jake is an enigma. I think Im going to be committing to all 6 books...awesome!
The only reason I gave it four stars is because it's a middle of the rung in terms of where it sits in the series. Can't wait to hear the rest!
