As part of a ruthless program by the totalitarian government, ninth-grade students are taken to a small isolated island with a map, food, and various weapons. Forced to wear special collars that explode when they break a rule, they must fight each other for three days until only one "winner" remains. The elimination contest becomes the ultimate in must-see reality television. A Japanese pulp classic available in English-language audio for the first time, Battle Royale is a potent allegory of what it means to be young and survive in today's dog-eat-dog world.

Histoire
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Histoire
Tristran Thorn will do anything to win the cold heart of beautiful Victoria Forester - even fetch her the star they watch fall from the night sky. But to do so, he must enter the unexplored lands on the other side of the ancient wall that gives their tiny village its name. Beyond that stone barrier, Tristran learns, lies Faerie . . . and the most exhilarating adventure of the young man's life.
Auteur(s): Neil Gaiman
Description
Only it's different...
At first, things seem marvelous in the other flat. The food is better. The toy box is filled with wind-up angels that flutter around the bedroom. But there's another mother, and another father, and they want Coraline to stay with them and be their little girl. They want to change her and never let her go.
Other children are trapped there as well, lost souls behind the mirrors. Coraline is their only hope of rescue. She will have to fight with all her wits if she is to save the lost children, her ordinary life, and herself.

Great
Loved the story. Gaiman's narration was great (and kind of hilarious). It was interesting to hear the story in the way he intended it to sound. I also loved the music interspersed within the audiobook. Overall, 5 stars.

Always loved the Coraline story
I've always been a huge fan of the Coraline story and have seen the movie multiple times. I thought it was time I read the original book. I especially enjoyed the fact it was narrated by the original author.

A delightful children's horror story
As someone who loves the film version, I wanted to listen to the original to compare and contrast the stories. My impression is that while the main components are the same, this original story is closer to horror lite than the film version, which merely runs into creepy territory.
That said, I liked the book as well as the film and if you're someone who likes scary-ish stories this could be for you. Mr. Gaiman's narration was enjoyable to listen to and the other auditory flourishes throughout the book added to the atmosphere of the story.
*SPOILER WARNING* In the book, Coraline's parents are much less neglectful and dismissive towards her (imho). Bigger differences are that in the book there is no Wyborn character or Coraline doll. And in the film she really enjoys going to the other world the first time time which is why she goes back. She didn't regret going until her second visit. In the book there is no fun first visit, she gets creeped out being there after the first visit and only returns to save her parents.

Unique story, could do without the music.
For some reason I wasn't aware that Neil Gaiman was British, so it was a bit jarring to hear the book read in a British voice. I did like it though; the movie was quite close to the book, yet the book gave me more of that stock-still, creepy factor from the Beldam that I imagined her to have. I personally felt like the music was extremely out of place (and not that good) so I could've done without it, but overall this audiobook was enjoyable and fairly well done.

A Better Book for a Younger Demographic
Good book, slow performance. Listen at 1.25x for the best listen. The book itself is great for youngsters getting into a horror/psuedo-horror genre. Neil Gaiman definitely has better books but this one is a fine addition to his repertoire.
