Publisher's Summary

DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she's seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She's gotten tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she's been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she's out.

Her partner, DS Joseph Easter, is the handsome, squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname, Holy Joe, belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

Their adversary is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement.

Crime in the Fens

Good story, but why, why, why the need to “act” voices. Just read the damn story. If I can figure out who is talking when I read the book, I can figure out who is talking when you read it to me.

Nice easy listen

Surprisingly enjoyable. I was a bit dubious in chapter 1, with the cliched character build of the lone “avenging angel” police officer. And yes, it is full of the familiar trope of <troubled cop seeking justice for all>, but it is well written, excellently performed and I am looking forward to listening to more books in the series.

Great story, horrific narrator

This book and (at least the two I've finished) the series are very engaging, well-written, and enjoyable.
The narrator should try a new job - or maybe visit some places in the UK. She can't do a Lincolnshire accent, an Irish accent, or a Geordie accent and barely changes vocals for any character. Such a shame.

Great story!

I am really enjoying Joy Ellis' story telling and writing. I started with another one of the series and really enjoyed all. The narrative style of this reader takes a little to get used to, especially when it comes to distinguishing the different characters voices. However, by the finish, the characters had just really reeled me into their wonderful world.

Great story but need to get used to the narration

Took the advice of another review and listened to the story 0.9x from the beginning and made a huge difference!
Loved the story and can’t wait for the next in series!

Didn’t think I was going to like it

At the beginning I didn’t really like the character Nikki but as the story progressed I was pleasantly surprised. I did enjoy this book and look forward to book 2 in the series

Good story. Paste of narration a bit to fast.

Good story. It was my first time with this author. Now jumping to the next book
