Publisher's Summary

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer.

Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.

The Kill Club is a macabre secret society obsessed with notorious crimes. When they locate Libby and pump her for details, proof they hope may free Ben, Libby hatches a plan to profit off her tragic history. For a fee, she'll reconnect with the players from that night and report her findings to the club...and maybe she'll admit her testimony wasn't so solid after all.

As Libby's search takes her from shabby Missouri strip clubs to abandoned Oklahoma tourist towns, the narrative flashes back to January 2, 1985. The events of that day are relayed through the eyes of Libby's doomed family members, including Ben, a loner whose rage over his shiftless father and their failing farm have driven him into a disturbing friendship with the new girl in town.

Piece by piece, the unimaginable truth emerges, and Libby finds herself right back where she started...on the run from a killer.

Another Great Read from Gillian Flynn

Just like the title of my review says, another fantastically dark tale from Gillian Flynn, albeit a lighter one as far as her stories go. The performances in this book I found to be superb, particularly for the two female narrators. I felt like they so perfectly encapsulated the characters they portrayed. Overall a riveting read from beginning to end, couldn’t recommend it enough.

I had a hard time putting Dark Places down.

I bought this book because it sounded interesting and I needed something to listen to while I painted my house. I ended up getting hooked and needing to know what happened next. Needless to say I had to find other things to entertain me while painting because I finished the audiobook well in advanced.

Very dark

This is the second book I’ve read of Gillian Flynn. First was sharp objects. Which I also thought was pretty dark. But dark places is far more dark. Found it difficult to get through the last hour or so of the book just because I was having trouble stomaching it. Just not my preference I guess. Book is well written. Performance was great. I just found it tough to finish it.

It was pretty good

I liked this book, it kept me going. I really wanted to figure out what happened but when it got to the end it seemed far fetched. #Audible1

Dark Places is a apt title for this — Dark indeed

This is a dark book. there was more than one occasion where I thought to myself, "Do you really need to describe that steal?" , "Do you need to go there?"
lots of twist and turns and people not what they seem.

Unlikeable characters.

I know this is kind of known to be a thing this author does but the main character was really annoying. Also, the ending was...bizarre.

Not what I expected

It was hard to get through. Sharp Objects was good but not this one. It was recommended to me.

Simply amazing

I was hooked as soon as I started listening to this audiobook, Libby is an honest representation of how someone can be affected by traumatic events, I am a huge fan of Gillian Flynn - as “Gone Girl” is my favourite book of all time .. but I think this one takes the cake. I was constantly replaying parts to ensure I heard everything correctly, because I didn’t want to miss anything. I loved how honest and vulnerable the characters were with their personal reflections, and feel that the psychological responses were scarily accurate. I highly recommend this book - and already know I will be re-reading it :)

Read it!!

I read a lot of thrillers. The endings are often disappointing. Rushed. Make little sense. But this one- this one wraps up beautifully. In a way that makes sense. The clues are left beautifully behind to unravel as you go, often giving you that “oh my god oh my god RIGHT THAT!!!” feeling when you know an author is excellent at their craft, left you the clues, but ultimately beat you to the punch. It’s a wonderful read.

Excellent story, even better narration

I enjoyed this book front to back, but the narration even better. Only regret is finishing it so fast.
