Publisher's Summary

"Chevy Stevens is a brilliant and unique talent and Dark Roads is an instant classic. My hat’s off to her." (C. J. Box, number one New York Times best-selling author of Long Range)

The Cold Creek Highway stretches close to five hundred miles through British Columbia’s rugged wilderness to the west coast. Isolated and vast, it has become a prime hunting ground for predators. For decades, young women traveling the road have gone missing. Motorists and hitchhikers, those passing through or living in one of the small towns scattered along the region, have fallen prey time and again. And no killer or abductor who has stalked the highway has ever been brought to justice.

Hailey McBride calls Cold Creek home. Her father taught her to respect nature, how to live and survive off the land, and to never travel the highway alone. Now he’s gone, leaving her a teenage orphan in the care of her aunt whose police officer husband uses his badge as a means to bully and control Hailey. Overwhelmed by grief and forbidden to work, socialize, or date, Hailey vanishes into the mountainous terrain, hoping everyone will believe she’s left town. Rumors spread that she was taken by the highway killer - who’s claimed another victim over the summer.

One year later, Beth Chevalier arrives in Cold Creek, where her sister Amber lived - and where she was murdered. Estranged from her parents and seeking closure, Beth takes a waitressing job at the local diner, just as Amber did, desperate to understand what happened to her and why. But Beth’s search for answers puts a target on her back - and threatens to reveal the truth behind Hailey’s disappearance....

A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Press

"Dark Roads is a chilling, pulse-pounding thriller that also tugs at the heartstrings. It's everything you've come to love from a master of the psych thriller genre!" (Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of The Other Mrs.)

"My favorite Chevy Stevens book since Still Missing. Stevens reliably creates complex, resilient female characters, and Hailey and Beth - whose lives collide in Dark Roads - are utterly compelling. The suspense builds with every page, and the ending is a complete shocker." (Sarah Pekkanen, number one New York Times best-selling Author of The Wife Between Us)

Absolutely captivating

From the very beginning of this novel I knew it was influenced by the highway of tears. Every woman in BC, indigenous or not knows and thinks about this unsolved case frequently. My mom made sure I didn't hitchhike as a teenager and this was edged into my brain as why. Chevy did a beautiful job of using 2 characters point of views to tell a heartbreaking and beautiful story of a fictional highway of tears. I loved that there were multiple readers who voiced the different narrations. Chevy always leaves me enthralled and ready for more and this novel was no different.

Gripping from the beginning of the Road

I was recommended to read ANY title by Chevy Stevens by a trusted, avid reader, so I jumped into Dark Roads, unaware this novel would stalk me...it was very hard to "put down" --found myself completely drawn into the heart thumping twists and turns of Dark Roads, all the while thinking I may know the killer and then bam, complete turn of events! HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book! Now the only question is, which Chevy Stevens do I read next?!

Binged this, loved this, highly recommend

Loved it! Narration done well by all voice actors, and helped the audio experience of different stories meshing in to the same timeline. Chevy Stevens is becoming my fave non-fiction writer, and her story telling is amazing. Highly recommend this book

Effing Amazing!!

I loved every minute of this book. The characters in their voices were great. I'm so happy I came across a tiktok video that had recommended five different books and this was the second one and I am so glad. Now it's time to go find more novels by this author.

Good story

This is a different perspective on the MMIW story but still relates some of the horror.

Good story, very engaging with great narration.

Chevy Stevens Fan Girl

This book was incredible. Heart pounding and shocking twists. I couldn't put it down. I devoured it in 2 days. The performances were top notch too. This is my second Chevy book and it won't be my last. I'm so glad she's bringing awareness to theway of tears and all the missing and murdered women along that remote road.

A MUST read

I wasn’t sure about picking up a fiction novel that so closely reflects the Highway of Tears; a tough subject but an important one. The author did a brilliant job creating fully rounded out female characters who readers quickly empathize with and care for. Chevy’s fictional Cold creek community mirrors real life to show us how easily these MMIWG could be your best friend, your next door neighbour, or your truck stop restaurant waitress.
It could be me. It could be you.
This is a fast-paced novel.
I listened to it over two days. I couldn’t stop.
