Description

Death of a Gossip

When society widow and gossip columnist Lady Jane Winters joined the fishing class, she wasted no time in ruffling the feathers—or was it the fins?—of those around her. Among the victims of her sharp tongue and unladylike manner was Lochdubh Constable Hamish Macbeth. Yet not even Hamish thought someone would permanently silence Lady Jane's shrills—until her strangled body is fished out of the river. Now with the help of the lovely Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, Hamish must angle through the choppy waters of the tattler's life to find the murderer. But with a school of suspects who aren't ready to talk and dead women telling no tales, Hamish may be in over his head, for he knows that secrets are dangerous, knowledge is power, and killers usually do strike again.

Death of a Cad

When Priscilla Halburton-Smythe brings her London playwright fiancé home to Lochdubh, everybody in town is delighted…except for love-smitten Constable Hamish Macbeth. Yet his affairs of the heart will have to wait. Vile, boorish Captain Bartlett, one of the guests at Priscilla's engagement party, has just been found murdered—shot while on a grouse hunt. Now with many titled party guests as the prime suspects, each with a reason for snuffing out the despicable captain, Hamish must smooth ruffled feathers as he investigates the case. When the hidden culprit strikes again, Hamish will find himself trying to save Priscilla from a miserable marriage—and catch a killer before he flies the coop.

Well done

Very good stories.
Surprising and at times brutal character conversations.
Good mysteries. Enjoyed both stories.

BETTER THAN TV SHOW

I've seen two of the TV episodes which were really disappointing, but listening to the books was much better. I'm surprised they ruin the stories on TV from the books. It's not going to be one of my favorite series but not bad. Wasn't impressed with the narrator, tho he wasn't terrible he just wasn't in the class with some of the other really good ones. I will probably try some more of the Hamish Macbeth stories, although I'm much prefer Agatha Raisin

Satisfying cozy mystery

I look forward to more of Hamish Macbeth. The narration is very good. I hope it is the same narrator in the next story.

Death of a Gossip and Death of a Cad

I enjoyed both stories. All the characters are very unique and sometimes funny. The mysteries are fairly simple but they still hold my interest. The narrator is excellent. I'll listen to more of the Hamish Mcbeth series.

Not A Big Fan Of 'Cozy' Mysteries..

..and this pair of sophomoric tales drove it home to me as to "Why".
That's not to say that I don't happily consume them (it's fair to say that I'm addicted to audiobooks).. and this book being offered as part of the 'Plus' initiative led me to give it a try. I mean, Why Not?

Mistake.

I should have spent my time listening to an alternative (e.g. something else in the 'Plus' catalogue - even another Cozy). Recently deceased prolific writer M.C. Beaton - best known for dozens & dozens of 'Agatha Raisin' and 'Hamish MacBeth' mysteries - demonstrates how very shallow this genre can get with these offerings. The plots are sketched-out, the false leads are telegraphed, and the characters are superficial & clichéd.

• 'Death Of A Gossip' deals with the strangling of an unscrupulous woman who revels in digging up skeletons & lies after joining a group of holidaying fishermen in the Scottish Highlands. Everyone has a motive and everyone hates the victim (yeah, it's pretty formulaic)
• 'Death Of A Cad' (starting at Chapter 9) is noticeably better than the first offering.. but doesn't break any new ground, either. Hamish's one-time assistant 'Priscilla Haliburton-Smythe' returns home to introduce her A-hole playwrite fiancé - just in time for the murder of a universally hated local ne'er-do-well. Everyone's a suspect. *yawn*

The one somewhat redeeming feature of this recording is capable (if unspectacular) narration from Antony Ferguson. He reads much too slowly (set playback speed at 1.20X for the most natural-sounding results) and with a noticeable "I'm reading a book sitting on my lap" uninterested tone - but with spot-on Scottish accents (Highlands & Glaswegian) and undeniable professionalism. The mostly quality voice-acting pairs nicely with great diction and pleasant timbre/cadence to yield an audio product that is comfortable to consume for hours.

Taken altogether, you can do much better than this 2/10-star pair of audiobooks. Even unapologetic fans of Cozy Mysteries should save their effort for something else - and DO NOT - by any means - spend a Credit on this stuff.

Could not continue

I can't really rate the story as I had to drop this book. I got used to excellent narrators and this one just couldn't get the cadence right. It was a run-on performance, without appropriate pauses after a quote that introduces a chapter, or pauses that separate 'scenes', or alternatively pausing in the middle of a dialogue as if the narrator lost the place in the page. It felt as if the narrator could not himself get into the story and read with disinterest. Sorry to be so blunt, but it made it impossible to get engaged with this writer, who, by all accounts is very well known and liked.

Passable, dated.

Sounds dated, more like a generic 1950s set piece. Indistinguishable characters mostly, lost my attention too often. Beaton is not for me.

Questionable accents.

The presentation was spoiled by the Narrator's poor Scots accents. It was particularly evident in the inability to pronounce "loch".
