Description

Eli Oleson killed a man. Never mind that he did it to save the lives of others, it’s eaten his soul to shreds. Nothing matters. When he injures himself breaking a horse, he has little reason to recover, except for the feisty English nurse who keeps pestering him.

Anne Hammond is a skilled nurse, trained in curing the sick and treating the wounded, but some wounds don't heal as easily. She's seen war and heartache and left England for the American West to forget the images that haunt her. When a cowboy, broken in more ways than she can see, winds up on her examining table, will she be skilled enough to assist in his healing? Or will his wounds only open the ones she thought she'd left behind?

Deep Longing of the Soul by Kari Trumbo

This story was sweet and simple. The plot wasn't at all complicated but definitely worth the while to read.

The narration by J.Scott Bennett was also good.

The story I was waiting for!

Since book one, I have been waiting for Eli's story. In book one, Eli ends up doing something a man never really wants to do even though it saves lives. He deals with his guilt in the background of book two, and now in book three, we get to see the effects of his guilt, self-hatred and assumption that everyone else sees him the way he sees himself.

Eli is forced to face his personal pain after being badly injured and cared for by the new town nurse, Anne Hammond who is herself having to heal from past events in her life. Both must forgive their pasts in order to look to the future that could be filled with love and friendship.

I like this story best of the three. Eli was both believable and you wanted to both cheer for him and shake him out of his self induced prison. Anne was a wonderful character who you also wanted to both cheer and shake at times. The honestly in their struggles and the difficulty of expressing their struggles was realistic. Kari did a good job of this without making them into caricatures. You can read this easily as a stand-alone book, but to understand the depth of Eli's pain, I would recommend reading the first two books before this one.

Since Anne is British, I was a bit skeptical about J. Scott Bennett doing a good job with the accent, but he did! It is hard to get someone who has a western twang to also pull off a good Brit! :)

I was given this review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Uplifitng and heart warming

The combination of Kari Trumbo and J Scott Bennett is one I love. I always know I will be in for a heart warming listen. When Eli is hurt by a horse he is training, he is thinking there is nothing worth getting better for. Carrying the guilt of killing a man, though to save others is doing him in. When his nurse, Anne comes to take care of him, things begin to change. Can this nurse from England heal the cowboy both physically and emotionally? Their story is sweet, full of a little banter and gives us hope. I love Anne with her common sense attitude. She is working through her own issues, and with the help of Eli, these two broken souls, with faith, hope and love help mend each other. Kari's stories stem from real issues, and though I can escape into their world, I love taking the message with me.

J Scott Bennett is perfect for the roles in the book. He has a soothing quality to his voice, giving that sense of peace as he reads. I love his surly attitude that he instills in Eli and the strong confidence in Anne. It's a great listen.

Guilt Weighs Heavy at Belle Fourche

Eli Oleson killed a man and it is eating him up to his very soul. Anne Hammond hasn’t killed anyone, but an incident in the hospital in England made her feel guilty. These two kindred spirits are united in the local medical clinic after Eli is attacked by a wolf while breaking a horse and he is under her care. Nurse Hammond has left England for new horizons and there is definitely a spark between the two. I enjoyed the warmth that the author brought to all of her characters. Both of the main characters have a lot of growing up and healing to do. The question is, can they do it together?
I was a bit surprised in the beginning that the narrator was a male, but the story was truly both of their stories. I thought the narrator was very good and was pretty good at imitating a female voice. His voice did not grate on my nerves and the story flowed well. The sound quality was excellent. The storyline was not complicated, just a tender love story that would be good to relax with. The characters were very likable, yet their stubbornness could be a bit frustrating.
Note: This is book 3 in the Brothers of Bell Fourche series. I had not read any of the others but I can see where it might be helpful to start at the beginning and get to meet all of the Oleson brothers and their wives to get their back story.
I received a complimentary Audible copy of the book from the author and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Two hurting souls, wanting to do it their way find that they don't have to do it alone.

A story of an injured man struggling to forgive himself and how he leans on his nurse who struggles with the same problem. Interesting story focusing on another brother in the series.

Fighting for love

Anne faced war and destruction in England. Coming to Belle Fourche allowed her to put her nursing skills to good use. Eli thought he wanted to die. He was a killer. When he is attacked by a wolf, his injuries forced Anne to relive her past. It takes both Anne and Eli helping each other to heal themselves.
Another beautiful story!

The angst of longing.

l felt like l was listening to one of the townsfolks older characters telling this story from his past. His voice sounds like l imagine a doctor from that time could sound. The story line was also true to the times and highlighted for me the caring and dedication of the nurse and wounded mens struggles. l turned the narrations speed up to 105%. for my own enjoyment.
l am looking forward to more in this series of good, clean cut, wholesome books by Kari.

Healing comes when we let go and let love...

Original review: Jul 21, 2018 ebook:
A heartfelt emotional story about healing physically and emotionally! Kari really gets to the core as these two self created outcasts find solace and love in each other! Wonderful!!

Updated review: Mar 9, 2019 audiobook:
This narration took a bit to feel comfortable. I never would have expected a make narrator for this book, but he did a great job!

It was a bit hard to distinguish changes in scenes without the visual aid of space and symbols.

I was given an audiobook copy from the author. My reviews are voluntary and my own.
