Publisher's Summary

The planet of Caliban exists much as it has for thousands of years - the knightly orders protect the common people, fighting back the beasts that lurk in the depths of the seemingly endless forests.

Young Zahariel and Nemiel aspire to join the greatest of the orders, led by the example of mighty Lion El'Jonson and his vision of a peaceful and unified world. But the coming of the Imperium brings new concerns and a new destiny for the Lion as part of the Great Crusade, and the sons of Caliban must decide if they will follow him to glory among the stars.

From Dark Ages, to Dark Angels.

Great book. Following the brothers from the dark ages of Caliban to the modernization of the Imperials. I looked forward to my drive to work everyday because of this book.

it's okay but not Warhammer

the overall story is good, but its not 30k this is a fantasy story. A good story but doesn't add anything to the HH series. In my opinion you could skip this book and just move on in the series without really missing anything.

a dark angel note setter rings hollow

as a Dark angels fan, it's always cool to take a trip back to Caliban.

Unfortunately this old romp through the pre-heresy dark Angels Homeworld leaves something to be desired.

my first complaint comes from the lackluster narration, which does little to engage or excite the listener.

the story is rife with foreshadowing and engaging lore tidbits which were awesome to behold. the prose of the novel is vivid and beautiful, setting a wonderful backdrop for the action.

unfortunately the action is usually underwhelming, unremarkable to a fault.
the real shortcoming of this book is the dialogue, which is downright disappointing.

the dialogue is repetetive and uninspired, usually in brief needlessly combative exchanges used to exposit information. these witless conversations are little more than a bare bones vehicle that drive the plot forward, and offer little in entertainment value.

ultimately a non-essential entry in the HH saga, this book can be enjoyed by dark Angels fans but is wholly forgettable.

Doesn't belong in the HH saga imo

Great book and narration, however this is just background lore to the Dark Angel's... it could have been a standalone.

Worst 40k novel I’ve read

By far my least favourite 40k novel to date. And I’m a die hard Dark Angels, fan which is the worst part.

Nothing about this book says 40K till the absolute last chapter. What a waste. Save your time, money and self respect.

Go read anything else 40K

Astartes don't sound like 9 year old boys.

How in the hell did the narrator think it was a good idea to keep the same voice for the boys that he did at the start of the story.

The listeners aren't stupid. We could figure out the voice change...

Good story, I wish there was more action with the primarch.

This didn’t make a lot of sense.

The story was okay. It was cool to learn the backstory of Caliban. That being said, the sense of scale given to the Order, the beasts and Caliban itself doesn’t make any sense.
Caliban and the Order is largely medieval with very limited, almost out of place technology like helmet communications, but everybody uses fire and torches for light. Where does the power come from?
Additionally Caliban is a planet covered in dense forest and beasts, yet the characters can ride basically anywhere on a horse in about a month. This makes it seem like all of Caliban’s land mass is something the size of the UK.

Otherwise the voice acting was excellent and it was cool to imagine techno-knights.

Another banger for the heresy series!

I swear, Gareth Armstrong’s narration is one of the reasons I was instantly hooked by 40k novels. Great to learn about the origins of the Dark Angels, their home world, and of course the Lion! Aside from that another fantastic entry for the heresy series - thoroughly enjoying my slow- albeit steady - progression through this series, and glad to be immersed into this universe so many years later when I used to collect figures as a child.

Medieval

I thought it would be cool to see things from the side of a colony making first contact but when that moment finally happens its just kinda glossed over, also its largely knights and castles if your into that

Just google a summary.

This book doesn't even take place during the Heresy. It's backstory to the Dark Angels legion. Also none of the book is from The Lions perspective, so don't expect much insight into his life. If you're having a hard time getting through it just google a summary, you won't miss anything interesting or important.
