Glock 17

Good book, Glocks don't have safety switches. Not a big problem, just detail oriented, I guess.

Die trying

Not the best narrator unfortunately. I found it really hard to listen to him. Good job it’s a good story and I forgot all about him

This non-Asian and non-French narrator should not mimic accents and learn how to pronounce French when reading French.

This narrator should be informed that it is offensive to hear his white attempt at voicing a Chinese woman. This is the 21st century, McLean. The horrible French was almost as despicable. The story itself was good.

1940 “B” movie narration

The plot is a typical Jack Reacher but the narration is a poor imitation of a Jimmy Cagney impression. I kept expecting to hear “You dirty rats..you’ll never take me alive”

I like the Jack Reacher novels but will not get another with this narrator.

Amazingly written story

This story has amazing imagery.. first 1/2 chapter I wasn’t sure about the narrator, since it’s different from book 1… but than he disappeared and the story took over… VERY WELL DONE!!!

Die trying

This book was an entertaining listen. I would have given the book a 5-star rating but I didn’t find the story as gripping as most of the Jack Reacher stories. Regardless, for anyone interested in action-adventure books, it was still very good.

I Kinda Understand the Popularity.. But..

After listening to this novel, I have to say Jack Reacher fans are correct to question casting Tom Cruise as this 'Force Of Nature' character. Reacher is just so overwhelming - relentless, fearless, ruthless, single-mindedly heroic - that Tom's 5'7" size (and dazzling smile) literally *cannot* portray the gritty intimidation Jack Reacher exudes.
Regardless, Lee Child's iconic hero is a blast to follow: demolishing criminal enterprises (that Police/Military are too bound by legalities to confront) like a wrathful hurricane. He represents a form of unfettered Justice that all of us want to happen sometimes (What!?! Criminals have Rights!?! Surely Not That Monster!!).
The action sequences are written well, the description of weapons is accurate enough for any gun enthusiast to geek out on, Reacher gets a ton of pussy, and his cockiness when staring down the barrel of a bad guy's Glock stimulates a flood of "Hell Yeah" Testosterone.

The problem is that the character is so poorly planned it's laughable. This protagonist makes zero sense. He has no motivation (other than "Those guys Bad. Must Kill!"), a two-dimensional background (at best), and straight-up silly "hero" qualifications (He's a US Marine MP - not even Special Forces - and most of his fighting experience comes from being a Bouncer at local Bars). This stuff is distracting and entertaining, but it's headshakingly implausible.

Johnathan McClain turns in an unspectacular reading performance in this audiobook. His diction, timbre, pacing, and cadence are passable, but his tone is too-serious and the voice-acting is below-average (female character voices are weak and McClain's Chicago accents are just plain bad). Penguin Audio doubtless made a mistake hiring McClain for books 2, 3, and 4 back in 2012 (although Dick Hill - 2015 onward - isn't much of an upgrade).

If you are a Jack Reacher fan, this is at most a "decent" entry. With a fairly weak plot (the kidnapping of a beautiful FBI Lawyer by domestic terrorists for a contrived 'blackmail' reason) and subpar narration, it rates 4.5 stars out of 10. You aren't crazy to buy this audiobook - and to keep consuming this adrenaline-driven Crack - but I personally will be giving up on the 'Jack Reacher' series.

[I just can't get past the writing deficiencies - 'Die Trying' is an examplar (admittedly a weak one) for a series of books that are too-formulaic and obviously "cranked-out" for the intended audience (TWENTY-FIVE books!?!). It's straight-up Pulp.
I find the work of authors like Hurwitz, Mars, and even Greaney much more palatable in the Action-Thriller genre - they at least put some effort into creating a realistic character]

Very Good!

Another series that I'll dive into. Fast paced and lots of action. Great storyline and the narrator nails it.

Enjoyable

I had mixed reviews about this book mostly about the caliber of narration but found it to be quite enjoyable. In fact I had purchased book 3 within listening to only 3 hours of book 2. Definitely word a listen the story telling is very good and it’s not easy to assume what’s going to happen
