Description

A New York Times best seller

An important overview of the way our justice system works, and why the rule of law is essential to our survival as a society - from the one-time federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, and host of the Doing Justice podcast.

Preet Bharara has spent much of his life examining our legal system, pushing to make it better, and prosecuting those looking to subvert it. Bharara believes in our system and knows it must be protected, but to do so, he argues, we must also acknowledge and allow for flaws both in our justice system and in human nature.

Bharara uses the many illustrative anecdotes and case histories from his storied, formidable career - the successes as well as the failures - to shed light on the realities of the legal system and the consequences of taking action.

Inspiring and inspiringly written, Doing Justice gives us hope that rational and objective fact-based thinking, combined with compassion, can help us achieve truth and justice in our daily lives. Sometimes poignant and sometimes controversial, Bharara's expose is a thought-provoking, entertaining book about the need to find the humanity in our legal system as well as in our society.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"The former federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York skillfully explains how he approached his job, offering a mixture of guiding principles and compelling anecdotes. Unlike many lawyers who write books, Bharara refreshingly avoids jargon, striking a conversational tone and regularly employing analogies and metaphors that make his points easily understandable. An engaging tour from beginning to end." (Kirkus Starred Review)

"Like the best lawyers (and writers), Preet Bharara tells a good war story. But Doing Justice is a great deal more - a vivid memoir of a critical job, a primer on the toughest questions of prosecutorial ethics, and a reminder of the drama inherent in life in the courtroom arena." (Jeffrey Toobin, author of American Heiress: The Kidnapping, Crimes and Trial of Patty Hearst)

An accessible look at a hard job

Bharara's calm and measured approach to one of society's hardest, most demanding, and least-understood professions makes it accessible to all people, free of judgment and without pulling any punches.

His reading voice is crisp and clear, and he provides the right amount of emotion as he presents a difficult topic.

A good read for the aspiring lawyer and human alike

A book full of practical knowledge for the budding lawyer. The insights were well thought out albeit safe but Preet does a excellent job using stories and experience to shed light on the workings of justice and the law. While it’s not a source ground breaking or controversial legal philosophy, it nevertheless compassionately informs and advises.

an inspirational tale of character

Preet reads in a bit of a monotone but his character and his case for character in all walks of life is great!

Unique and interesting.

Some of the most interesting and complex yet simple stories I've ever heard. Preet wrote an excellent story about things that could not be, but were and things that should not have been, but are. Simply stunning.

Not what i expected from Preet

Preet speaks to effortlessly and candidly on his podcast. This book is stunted, overly complex structure, to whimsical, and simply not what i expected after listening to his other work.

Write and speak simply, Preet. We already know you're smart.

Very well done

I selected this title because I listen to Cafe Insider. I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book. It is interesting, well written and I enjoyed hearing the author read it. I did not expect to be as taken with the subject matter as I was, but Preet Bharara is a great story teller. I was sad it ended and look forward to other books by this author.
