How we fight predicts the future of our relationships. Most of us blunder into conflict without knowing what we are really fighting about and then quickly become overwhelmed by physiological responses we can’t control and emotions we don’t anticipate. What makes love last? Why does one couple stay together forever, while another falls apart? And most importantly, is there a scientific formula for love? Drs. John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman are the world’s leading relationship scientists. For the past forty years, they have been studying love. They’ve gathered data on over three thousand couples, looking at everything from their body language to the way they converse to their stress hormone levels. Self-love - our capacity to feed our spirit, fill our "love cup’ and feel inner peace is endless - we just need to tap into it. But how? How the heck do we create [or experience] inner happiness? More children than ever are growing up in fatherless homes, despite the overwhelming evidence that in every measurable way this is bad for the child. The Center for Disease Control also recently reported a dramatic rise in sexually transmitted disease nationwide. In Rhode Island alone, since the onset of online dating, reported cases of Syphilis has risen 79%, and HIV has increased by 33%.

This book was very informative and practical. Loved the examples and I think these are lifelong suggestions that can be applied to any stage of a relationship. Being honest, understanding of where people are and being respectful of the decisions of others we key takeaways.

Learned so much
This audiobook helped me understand that the purpose of a relationship is to know each other, not to change each other, and that conflict can be painful but it’s the mechanism by which the relationship grows.

Interesting but not life-changing
The book offers a number of interesting ideas and insights. We followed the dates, and found that having conversations was very useful. Of course the 8 dates did not change our lives or dramatically improved our marriage, but I found some utility in them. Nothing replaces counselling, but this book gives a number of handy tools for self-care and self-maintenance. I would recommend it, with a caveat not to expect magic transformations.

Thought provoking!
Such a great book if you’re building something new with someone or if you’ve been with someone for a long time. The discussion questions are thought provoking and interesting and it helps develop more of an understanding and connection to your partner if both of you are open and honest. I would highly recommend!

Makes more sense as a hard copy
I liked this book but it’s filled with questions to ask your partner so it makes little sense as an audiobook, what am I going to transcribe the questions so I can bring them with me on the date?? 😂 also, this book is not a light read, it’s brings up so many questions that I often had to take a step back and completely rethink things. Which was good, but it felt heavy at times. Again, I think it would have been better for me to take it piece by piece in hard copy form. It’s almost like a workbook.
