Publisher's Summary

Stephen King reads his latest novel - plus a bonus story, “Laurie,” unavailable in book form!

“As the narrator, King enhances the story’s good-hearted appeal with this twangy, aw-shucks delivery. He gives a strong portrayal of everyman Scott Carey, whose strange affliction sends him on a quest of self-discovery and neighborly kindness. And King’s isn’t just a pleasant voice. He crafts a polished aural experience with a keen sense of pacing and fun accents for his motley Maine characters.” (AudioFile)

Number-one New York Times best seller

The latest from legendary master storyteller Stephen King, a riveting, extraordinarily eerie, and moving story about a man whose mysterious affliction brings a small town together - a timely, upbeat tale about finding common ground despite deep-rooted differences.

Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis.

In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade - but escalating - battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice. Both are trying to launch a new restaurant, but the people of Castle Rock want no part of a gay married couple, and the place is in trouble. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face - including his own - he tries to help. Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott’s affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others.

From Stephen King, our “most precious renewable resource, like Shakespeare in the malleability of his work” (The Guardian), Elevation is an antidote to our divisive culture, as gloriously joyful (with a twinge of deep sadness) as It’s a Wonderful Life.

Just a real good story!

This definitely differs from King's usual novels both in length and context. It is a story that hits you right in the feels, both the happy and the sad ones. With King narrating the book himself it seems to give you a little something extra to it.

Good story, monotonous narration

The story was good, but the narration by the author took away from the way that I had imagined the characters to be. There was a monotonous timbre to the authors reading of his words.

Laurie was really good

Elevation was so-so, not my favourite. Character interaction was good, but premise felt forced.

The bonus short story Laurie was very good.

I really enjoyed this book. I read some bad reviews on it and was glad I ignored them.

Lower end of the 'King Scale'

It was okay. Good quick listen and it was great to hear King narrate the story himself. To me the story itself fell a bit short. Didn't seem to have the signature horror, mystery or drama that a Stephen King novel is known for. It was a bit different. Good short read though.

Beautiful

I think the quote about this story being on par with Its A Wonderful Life is too much, but it is a beautiful and big story set in small places, where all the wonderful stuff is. Highly worth listening to, and King does a great job as narrator. I’ll listen to him again.

2 stories, 1 very good, 1 not so very good

The title novella is based on the premise that a 42 YO man is inexplicably loosing weight (no, not the same as Thinner), but staying the same size. He looses a pound or 2 each day, but his physique remains the same. If he touches someone or something, they become weightless, but they stay heavy to him. Sounds clunky? It is. Extremely. What would otherwise be a good story with a good message is lost in trying to fit this ridiculous plot mechanism in. Does Stephen King not use editors anymore?

The second is a short story about a man, recently widowed, who has a puppy thrust upon him by his loving but sometimes overbearing sister. It's very good.

A nice and quick read!

Its worth a credit if you have some to spare. Not sure I would spend actual money on it as it is only two short stories.
