Publisher's Summary

MythBusters’ Adam Savage - Discovery Channel star and one of the most beloved figures in science and tech - shares his golden rules of creativity, from finding inspiration to following through and successfully turning your idea into reality.

Adam Savage is a maker. From Chewbacca’s bandolier to a thousand-shot Nerf gun, he has built thousands of spectacular projects as a special effects artist and the cohost of MythBusters. Adam is also an educator, passionate about instilling the principles of making in the next generation of inventors and inspiring them to turn their curiosity into creation.

In this practical and passionate guide, Adam weaves together vivid personal stories, original sketches and photographs from some of his most memorable projects, and interviews with many of his iconic and visionary friends in the arts and sciences - including Pixar director Andrew Stanton, Nick Offerman, Oscar-winner Guillermo Del Toro and artist Tom Sachs - to demonstrate the many lessons he has picked up from a lifetime of making.

Things like: don’t wait until everything is perfect - in your workshop or in your life - to begin. Plan with pencil and paper. Sweep up every day. Learn from doing. Share your toys. There is an exact tool for every task (Adam probably has four of them in his wondrous shop), but if you need to pound in a nail and all you have handy is a skill saw - hammer away. The most important thing, always, is just that you make something.

Every Tool’s a Hammer is sure to guide and inspire you to build, make, invent, explore and, most of all, enjoy the thrills of being a creator.

Awesome Book, and Exactly What I Needed

I can’t begin to say how much I needed this book. And I had no idea when I got it that it would be so helpful in all the crappy struggles I’ve been having for the last decade in trying to find time, energy, room, and motivation for my endless and (seemingly) hopelessly stalled-out creative ventures. I didn’t even read the book’s description beforehand—I bought it because I’ve always loved Myth Busters, and I saw this come up on Audible and thought, “Hey! Myth Busters guy! He’s awesome! Hell yeah, I’ll listen to him talk about all the awesome stuff he’s done!” What I ended up getting was not only a great time listening to an enthusiastic and wildly talented guy talking about how he’s gotten to where he is today, but an invaluable window into the long-term evolution of a professional’s creative process and an unbelievable amount of things that I can try myself in order to end the stalemate with my own brain and its endless supply of creativity-based excitement, doubt, frustration, fascination, impatience, and ideas (SO MANY IDEAS). I can’t stress enough how helpful listening to this has been for where I’m at right now—I’ll be leaving it downloaded on my phone for a while, for a great deal of rereading/listening. LOVE this book. Get it for the entertainment, stay for the insight into how a person might develop just about any form and scope of a creative life 👏❤️

A Superb Listen!

I absolutely loved this book, and it was made even sweeter by the fact that it was narrated/read by the author himself. Much of Adam’s wisdom & knowledge is very much applicable to other domains outside of making. As someone who has built an awful lot things out of cardboard over the years, I very much identify with this maker movement. ✂️📐
