What the critics say

"[Narrator Robin] Miles offers a steady pace - not too slow, not too fast. Her tone is as insightful and poignant as the author's content. Both women take listeners through a historical and present-day journey that conveys the importance of embracing feminism." (AudioFile)

Each one teach one

What I appreciate about this book is even though I was familiar with some of the concepts it gave me a better language to possibly explain it to others.

awesome, but it is a product of its time

loved it, a true classic. Just keep in mind that it is a product of its time much has changed in the world since it was written. During the part when she talks about historical things, I would have appreciated her saying where she got her sources or what speeches or et cetera when she talked about historical things specifically. other then that, it is a must read

Good overview

This book seeks to explain the current state of feminist thought, how the feminist movement arrived at its present state, mistakes made, and proposes how to move forward to achieve still valuable goals.

good history of feminist movement

hook's gives a good history of feminist movement up into the 1990s. she does a good job of painting the diversity of feminism's and the co-optation of feminist politics. some of her points could have used deeper discussion, especially linking the idea of abusive relationships to patriarchy.

this seemed to be a reasonable introductory text, but it would have benefited from a few more definitions. She really should have defined patriarchy and sexism.

Still relevant

This was published years ago but it's still relevant! It touches on privilege, intersectionality, racism, toxic masculinity, etc. And, it points out that men aren't the problem, our patriarchal system is.

It is something that everyone needs to read

It took me a long time to finish because it dealt with some hard issues. It addressed the majority of what I had been feeling and thinking towards patriarchy but was never able to put into words. It really opened my eyes to a lot of ways I needed to change my world view and how I was quite ignorant to a lot of issues. I don't feel like the author properly addressed why the church hates feminism. I also don't feel like the author talked enough about ways to move away from patriarchy and what it looks like in real life, not theory.
