Publisher's Summary

When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern - no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.

Marsh meant to turn down York’s offer. It was too full of secrets that spelled danger. But the promise of both gold and a grand new boat that could make history crushed his resolve - coupled with the terrible force of York’s mesmerizing gaze. Not until the maiden voyage of his new sidewheeler Fevre Dream would Marsh realize he had joined a mission both more sinister, and perhaps more noble, than his most fantastic nightmare...and mankind’s most impossible dream. Here is the spellbinding tale of a vampire’s quest to unite his race with humanity, of a garrulous riverman’s dream of immortality, and of the undying legends of the steamboat era and a majestic, ancient river.

Incredible performance for an excellent vampire story

Ron Donachie is unbelievable narrating this. His character voices are superb. If you read Dracula and are looking for something with a similar pace, highly recommend this 1850s American vampire tale.

An Incredibly Underrated Gem

For an author as famous as George R.R. Martin is always a surprise to me that not many people have heard of this novel. Its certainly a departure from Martin's others work such the A Song of Ice and Fire series but nonetheless shows his diversity as a writer. I also really enjoyed Ron Donachie's vocal performance, he effortlessly breathes life into each character individually with their different accents and dialects. Overall a masterclass in horror with a unique twist of the vampire sub-genre.

great vampire story marred by manufactured drama

martin wrote ¾ of a great story. unfortunately the final stretch is full of dumb decisions by the protagonists not because it is within their characters, but solely for the sake of heightened drama. as a reader you can only abide so many unintelligent decisions before the drama feels manufactured and unearned. still, that is not enough to forego a great vampire novel. and the narrator is excellent.

Steamboats and Vampires. Who knew?

As someone with little interest in or knowledge of steamboats, and who is suspicious of most or all “vampire fiction,” I was surprised to be utterly drawn in to this story. Yes, I have read other books by Martin, so I knew to expect some solid character development and intriguing plot. What I did not expect was how genuinely true to life this vampire story feels. Obviously, it has fantastical elements, but they are rendered in such a convincing way that I had no trouble suspending my disbelief. My only problem with the novel is that the pacing seems a bit off, with a couple jarring scene transitions with a significant chunk of action being recounted by one character to another. Also, it is a very limited third person perspective, which normally suits me fine, but I found myself wishing for a couple more points of view. All that said, this novel is well worth a listen. The performance was stellar—I never imagined a Scot(?) could do American voices so well!

A really good story, now a really good audiobook

As the headline states, this is just a great story on its own. I don't know anything about George's other works other than his space opera, but this one has always stuck with me since the mid nineties. Back when I was just getting into the hardcore stuff, like Anne Rice. Ah, youth..

Anyway, this audiobook does the book justice. The voices are all great, at least the memorable ones. The more or less sound how I had heard them in my head. If you are a fan of more down to earth stories that take little investment to enjoy, I highly recommend this book.
