Description
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the results of a hundred battles.” (Sun Tzu, 5th Century BCE)
Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the hero of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, has his world turned upside down when his character, of which he is particularly proud, is called into question by those whom he trusts.
Will he learn from his mistakes or remain his own worst enemy?
When he discovers a secret which could destroy not only the reputation of his beloved sister but threatens her very life, he can no longer hide behind his mask of social indifference. Dismaying circumstances will test the strength of his personal beliefs and convictions as well as his devotion to family and friends as a rival from his past determines to ruin him and take everything Darcy holds dear. Out of the flames of adversity, Miss Elizabeth Bennet, once scorned, becomes a beacon of hope.
Can love grow from adversity? Is happiness possible?
In this full-length novel set in Regency England, true friendships are made, enemies are revealed, and happily-ever-after is on the horizon. Or is it?

Mr. Darcy has a rough ride
I REALLY loved this story, but I truly felt sorry for Mr. Darcy early on. He was constantly being made to realize just how arrogantly he had behaved. He was, luckily for him, not taken to task harshly except by himself. Richard took him to task good naturally, Bingley dropped a non subtle hint or two, Lydia, of all people hit him the hardest. But all of this made him take stock of his actions. There were several other occasions of things overheard by him or reactions by Lizzy, once he became self aware, that had him in a perpetual state of self examination.
Aside from that, there were some other very well done changes in the basic tale that helped make this story one of the best I’ve heard to date. Prepare for some shocking news for Georgiana, some absolute villainy from Wickham, the usual antics from Lady Kathryn and Ms. Bingley. It kept me up all night listening.
Of course, Stevie Zimmerman is superb, as usual. No one does JAFF narration better!

one of the best, prizing Elizabeth's mind
Loved the attention to Elizabeth's intellectual connection to Darcy! Her mind is more of a draw to him even than her physical appearance. This Darcy will adore his Elizabeth, no matter how time alters her beauty.

A new twist
I loved this new way for Darcy to understand his shortcomings. I admired Elizabeth taking him to task so strongly about Wickham, who is as wicked here as it gets. The way to smoke out Wickham was brilliant, I enjoyed the way Darcy managed to swallow his pride and exposed his former friend's crimes. Georgiana's recovery was described very well, and she blossomed.
Steve Zimmerman is one of my favorite narrators, and this one was as perfect as her other audiobooks.

An entertaining and well narrated re-imagining.
What did you love best about Friends and Enemies?
The narrator did an incredible job and the story itself is definitely one of my favorite variations by J.Dawn King.
What about Stevie Zimmerman’s performance did you like?
I loved that Stevie could do both the female and male narrations so well. The narration kept me intrigued and engaged.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I definitely felt a tug on the heart strings any time Darcy thought about his sister and her situation. The turmoil that he was feeling was definitely palpable with the addition of the narration.

Ver good book
I liked this book very much. Loved the way Caroline and Wickham got it. I wished Lady Catherine would have been put in her place a bit better. I loved that E & D were together most of the book, learning of each other.

Wonderful audiobook
Loved the audiobook as well as the paperback of this gorgeous variation of P&P!
I liked how Darcy had to work to change throughout the book, and how supportive of Georgiana he was all the way through!

Wouldn't recommend
The characters are very far from their original personalities. Darcy is so proud and insecure that I wonder why Lizzie chose to be with him. Lizzie's personality is changed as well. Not for the better. The plot is not interesting enough and their banter is dull. I was xpecting the story to get better. It didn't.
Having said that, Stevie Zimmerman is wonderful, as always. I think that's the only reason I finished it.

Very entertaining and enjoyable.
Where does Friends and Enemies rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the top and I listen to at least two a week while going about my day.
What did you like best about this story?
The various characters come to life with all the voices the narrator uses. This is a variation that makes you wonder what would have happened if Mr. Darcy knew what Elizabeth really thought of him before Hunsford. Lydia Bennet is the first character and her lively and brash personality comes across exactly as I pictured her in this variation. As this variation continues we learn more about Mr. Darcy and his personality and his struggles, making him more human.
Have you listened to any of Stevie Zimmerman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
There are few narrators I have found that make the stories come to life and Stevie Zimmerman is one of the best. The story comes to life as I image each of the characters in my mind, it’s almost as if I’m at a play.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Definitely, when I’m lost in the story it’s hard for me to otherwise. My earbuds are my best friend and my Alexa dot takes over when possible.
Any additional comments?
I have been a fan of J Dawn Kings work for a long time. I usually add the audiobook to my collection after reading her books. I recommend her other books, especially “A Father’s Sins: A Pride and Prejudice Variation.
