Publisher's Summary

Italy, 1943—Germany occupies much of the country, placing the Jewish population in grave danger during World War II.

As children, Eva Rosselli and Angelo Bianco were raised like family but divided by circumstance and religion. As the years go by, the two find themselves falling in love. But the church calls to Angelo and, despite his deep feelings for Eva, he chooses the priesthood.

Now, more than a decade later, Angelo is a Catholic priest and Eva is a woman with nowhere to turn. With the Gestapo closing in, Angelo hides Eva within the walls of a convent, where Eva discovers she is just one of many Jews being sheltered by the Catholic Church.

But Eva can't quietly hide, waiting for deliverance, while Angelo risks everything to keep her safe. With the world at war and so many in need, Angelo and Eva face trial after trial, choice after agonizing choice, until fate and fortune finally collide, leaving them with the most difficult decision of all.

A love story

Where true love dwells, no person can take away. Through war’s devastation this story shows hope where religion, faith remains but faith in God religion does not keep love apart. A story if the lies told and believed then reality becomes truth.

Amazing narration and story!

Always enjoy Amy Harmon’s work - often learn from historical contexts and her character development is so thorough and well done that the reader is pulled right into the plot - always hooks me and then can’t put the book away... nothing else gets done!

Amazing story and beautiful performance

Everything about this book is perfect. The storyline, the character development, historical facts and what a performance!!! Absolutely loved it. The holocaust is very close to my heart and i have read many books that recounted the WWII history and this book did not disappoint.

A wonderful touching read

Very well done. It grabbed you from the start and you could relate to the world war 2 situations and shear tragedies of the characters.

Good book, interesting story

The story was well written, interesting, powerful and heart wrenching. The characters are well developed and the author made them come alive. The setting of the story was placed in a well researched environment, ww2 in Italy. However, too many “miracles” that happened to the main characters made some parts of the story not quite realistic. Also, I found that the voice used in the audiobook for Eva was a little bit annoying, she sounded like she was the most of the time on brink of tears. In my opinion it somehow didn’t suit the very strong female character like Eva.
Despite all this, I would recommend this book.

Enjoyable story

I liked the story of Ava and Angelo but felt some parts were too drawn out and I just wanted to move on. It was heavily focused on religion. Overall it was moving and I enjoyed most of it.
