Like many others on the autism spectrum, 20-something stand-up comic Michael McCreary has been told by more than a few well-meaning folks that he doesn’t “look” autistic. But, as he’s quick to point out in this memoir, autism “looks” different for just about everyone with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Standing Ovation!

Thanks Michael for sharing your stories and experiences with the world - I thoroughly enjoyed the listen. I have a little one who is still a little young to effectively communicate what kind of interesting things goes on in that big neurodiverse brain of his, and the way you communicated your story really helped me gain more insight into that. I look forward to heading up the 400 and seeing you perform once we can safely get back into comedy clubs!

Very relatable!

I have recently realized that some of my close relationships are with people with autism. My 29 year old son has never been diagnosed as he is very good at presenting a different person in public. He is also into musical theatre. His wedding in August is going to be a show.
I also dated an autistic man for over a year and we have been friends for about 9 years. We are way better together as friends. I broke up with him 3 times before it sunk in. And then he was in shock.
Most of Michael’s stories ring true for my son. I looked everywhere for help, but found none. We had so many challenges as he grew up, and especially in his teens.
Michael is so blessed to have such supportive parents. They really supported him to succeed in this crazy, often hostile world. Somehow, with the grace of God and no real help from me, my son learned to navigate the world and is also thriving.
Thank you Michael for your light-hearted view of your Autistic life. I am sure it has been a struggle every step of the way, but you have overcome so much and are stronger and wiser for it. I appreciate all you are doing to help NTs understand and to help those with Autism understand themselves.

Delightful and helpful

I loved this book. It’s an inspiring, funny coming-of-age memoir that helped me as a parent gain more insight into my son’s struggles and I can’t wait to share this book with him when he’s old enough.

Brilliant! Just brilliant!

This is by far the best book I have read about autism to date. The reason this book first caught my attention was because of the title. My son is on the spectrum and literally cannot count how many times I’ve heard “really!? He doesn’t look autistic, I never would have guessed!” And I just want to scream because, while they think they’re paying him a compliment, it is so heartbreaking that society still has this idea of what autism “looks like.” So when I saw this book, written and narrated by a person on the spectrum as an adult, it pulled me in immediately.

I absolutely love this book. Michael is a born entertainer! The book itself is wonderfully written and excellent all on its own. However, Michael is such an excellent presenter that I feel like listening to it was even better. I loved how candid he is about both the difficulties that he has faced and the positivity and happiness he has experienced. It touched my heart, made me cringe, and made me laugh. I didn’t want the book to end.

A good listen

Live it!

Had the pleasure to see Michael perform, he is great. Loved to learn more about him and his life. I'm a mom if an ASD young man (23) and work in the field of Autism. Great to hear his perspective.

been diagnosed 2 months ago(Asd) this is so me i really see myself haha I did do theater for a few years as pre teen and wanted to be a comedian.. haha 🤣 love it really fun !

Life changing book for anyone with Autism

I loved this book. It taught me a lot about myself. The author is extremely brave and praiseworthy. He's gone through a lot to give this to us. I appreciate that and him. This book changed me. I will listen to it again in the future.
