Description

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Margaret Mitchell's great novel of the South is one of the most popular books ever written. Within six months of its publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind had sold a million copies. To date, it has been translated into 25 languages, and more than 28 million copies have been sold.

Here are the characters that have become symbols of passion and desire: darkly handsome Rhett Butler and flirtatious Scarlett O'Hara. Behind them stand their gentler counterparts: Ashley Wilkes and Melanie Hamilton. As the lives and affairs of these absorbing characters play out against the tumult of the Civil War, Gone With the Wind reaches dramatic heights that have swept generations of fans off their feet.

Having lived in Atlanta for many years, narrator Linda Stephens has an authentic ear for the dialects of that region. Get ready to hear Gone With the Wind exactly as it was written: every word beautifully captured in a spectacular unabridged audio production.

Great book, okay reader

After reading Gone with the Wind I understand why it is a classic! I was pulled in by the story from the very beginning.
The narrator did a great job with the different accents and adding feeling to the story but read so SLOWLY and with so many huge pauses that I had to speed it up using my app for the entire book. Once it was sped up I was very impressed by her performance.

A Literary Masterwork

I should start off by saying that Mitchell's version of events following the American Civil War are VERY slanted and more characters grow more outspokenly racist as the story progresses. HOWEVER, it does offer insight into just why Southerners today can't seem to let the Civil War go. It's this version of events, regardless of the actual truth, that they cling to. So just go into this one knowing that you're seeing things through the lenses of a victimized South lorded over by corrupt Yankees and hordes of dangerous freed slaves. It's not a history book. It's a fairy tale, but one that's told with great passion.

With that said, Mitchell is one of the most accomplished writers I have ever encountered. Her characters are flawed, complex, relatable, multi-faceted, and compelling. Her prose is swift and descriptive, and her dialogue crackles with wit and emotion and humour. Scarlett and Rhett are some of my favourite literary characters ever, specifically because they are so flawed and human. They're selfish, manipulative, beset by insecurities, and are able to dig deep and find the strength they need to survive the Civil War, even if it means they have to abandon their moral center. They're not GOOD people, but they're compelling anti-heroes you can't help but root for.

I also LOVE the narrator of this audiobook, Linda Stephens. Her accents and voices are perfect, and when she encounters any songs, she sings them with a perfect clear voice that was so surprising, considering most other narrators either recite song lyrics or try to sing and end up butchering them.

This is a fantastic yarn that, despite its length, is impossible to stop listening to. The brutal racism is very difficult to get through, though, and there are parts (liberal uses of the N word) that children should definitely not hear, so I'd suggest sticking with headphones. But I think this is an important text, if only so one can get inside the heads of the South after the Civil War, so you can understand just why they mistrust the North so much.

Outstanding. I didn't want it to end.

I was so reluctant to come to the end of this audiobook that I kept rewinding - postponing the last moments and the dialogue that I knew was to come. Linda Stephens is a brilliant narrator. She is in the ranks of Juliet Stevenson and Rosamund Pike, (in my opinion), and although her accents are not as diverse as Thandie Newton (who is truly brilliant), every nuance of expression, and every word was crystal clear. It was simply a pleasure from beginning to end. I had read Gone with the Wind, but like one reviewer, I had tended to gloss over details in favour of dialogue. Thanks to the skillful and engaging narration and of course Margaret Mitchell's writing, I didn't want to miss a word. Like all great literature, this book abounds in masterful insights into human nature and richly textured characters. I learned more about the history of the south, and plantation life and the years following the civil war from this book, than from anything I have before seen or read. Don't be put off by the length of this audio-book. It will be well worth your time!

excellent

What an excellent, timeless story. I didn't want it to end. Only one slight problem, the narrator took many long pauses - long enough to make me think I had accidently turned off the book, and the swallowing noises were distracting but it got better as the book went on - or perhaps I just got used to it.

Either way, if you are a lover of this movie, I strongly recommend this book. It's absolutely fantastic.

Excellent Rollercoaster of Events

I kept in mind that this book was written in the 1930s about the American civil war, so this book is strife with racism and problematic language. I did feel embarrassed listening to this on a speaker, so keep that in mind before you buy. Will this ruin the book for you? Skip the one then.
I honestly had no idea what the heck the story of Gone with the Wind was and it kept surprising me how it went on and on. But I didn't get bored! Scarlet is singularly dislikeable and interesting.
