Publisher's Summary

An electrifying thriller from the New York Times best-selling author in the Star Trek: The Next Generation universe.

It's 2031. US Air Force fighter jets shoot down an unidentified spacecraft and take its crew into custody. Soon it's learned that the ship is one of several dispatched across space by an alien species, the Eizand, to search for a new home before their own world becomes uninhabitable. Fearing extraterrestrial invasion, government and military agencies that for more than 80 years have operated in secret swing into action, charged with protecting humanity no matter the cost....

It's 2386. Continuing their exploration of the Odyssean Pass, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the starship Enterprise discover what they at first believe is a previously uncharted world, with a civilization still recovering from the effects of global nuclear war. An astonishing priority message from Starfleet Command warns that there's more to this planet than meets the eye, and Picard soon realizes that the mysteries of this world may well weave through centuries of undisclosed human history....

Great story and performance.

I really enjoyed the story and the performance of the narrator. He does a very good interpretation of Picard and Worf.

Nice story, but annoying “breaking the fourth wall” moments

The story is nice and the performance of really good, but there’s a weird recurring interaction between the characters and the narrative, where the narrative provides some background on the historical context of what’s happening, which then gets rounded off by the internal narrative of one of the characters. For example (…) the Enterprise had to leave with its tail tucked between its legs … (then in Geordi’s voice) “or its warp core tucked between its nacelles, whatever”. It’s annoying, yanks the listener out of the story and doesn’t fit well with the characters. It also becomes repetitive.

Some characters’ narratives also don’t fit their on-screen personalities very well. Picard, for example, is far more impulsive and emotional than in any of the series or movies.

Back and forth not working here

I love Star Trek, but this book with its long and drawn out back in forth between timelines and chapters was too much for me. I did like the idea of the story, but it’s not quite original now is it? In regard to the performances? Sub standard, I did not feel the conviction in what they were saying.
