Publisher's Summary

In 2010, the al Rabeeah family left their home in Iraq in hope of a safer life. They moved to Homs, in Syria - just before the Syrian civil war broke out.

Abu Bakr, one of eight children, was 10 years old when the violence began on the streets around him: car bombings, attacks on his mosque and school, firebombs late at night. Homes tells of the strange juxtapositions of growing up in a war zone: horrific, unimaginable events punctuated by normalcy - soccer, cousins, video games, friends.

Homes is the remarkable true story of how a young boy emerged from a war zone - and found safety in Canada - with a passion for sharing his story and telling the world what is truly happening in Syria. As told to her by Abu Bakr al Rabeeah, writer Winnie Yeung has crafted a heartbreaking, hopeful, and urgently necessary book that provides a window into understanding Syria.

An Eyeopener

I listened to this in almost one “sitting”. What an education. We in the first world, as a rule, have little concept of the story behind the news. This book helps to mitigate that. Hats off to Abu Bakr family and friends.

This Book Seizes Your Heart

I was captivated by the immediacy of Abu Bakr's description of his 'worlds'. This book is not only about life in a war torn country and the experience of immigrating to Canada but it illustrates the adaptability of human nature, the bonds of family and friends, the courage and fear of living in a place devastated by war, and the adaptability to make wherever home is, normal. This is evidenced by Abu Bakr's 'matter of fact' renditions of horrific events without any drama. The descriptions of how the family and friends interact, illustrates how much everyone has in common in spite of vast differences in circumstances. And above all, Abu Bakr's insight engenders a deep compassion and respect for those who have left their homes and friends and family to find refuge here. Winnie Yeung's commitment and talents helped Abu Bakr make this book a reality. The narration was perfect as well. I highly recommend this title.

An absolutely amazing book.

I learned so much not only about life in a war torn world but about the Muslim faith. This young man's journey is fascinating and eye opening. His father is a tower of strength. You must read or listen to this book. It will change your world view

Captivating story

This is a great listen with a balance of details and movement and could be helpful for teens & families looking for a deeper understanding of the refugee experience.

Had to listen until the end

Great story of what we Canadians know nothing about. I'm glad we are so open minded in Canada. I'm grateful for his sharing of his story.

Good insight to a refugee family.

Must read. A close family with happy memories and traditions in their country but forced to move because of war.

Fascinating!

Abu Bakr's story is truly remarkable. It was so interesting learning about him and his family's life and the struggles they faced while growing up in Syria and moving to Canada. Really gives an understanding of how other parts of the world are living. Definitely worth the read!

we are more alike than we are different...

Abu Bakr's young voice and the recency of the events give a glimpse into another world we usually only hear about in the news, where it's easier to forget the individuals behind the stories.
