Publisher's Summary

Number one New York Times best-selling author Sarah J. Maas launches her brand-new CRESCENT CITY series with House of Earth and Blood: the story of half-Fae and half-human Bryce Quinlan as she seeks revenge in a contemporary fantasy world of magic, danger, and searing romance.

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life-working hard all day and partying all night - until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She'll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose - to assassinate his boss' enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he's offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City's underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion - one that could set them both free, if they'd only let it.

With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and pause-resisting suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by number one New York Times best-selling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom - and the power of love.

A chaster romance than ACOTAR

I'll be frank: I love ACOTAR for being a slow-burn romance with explicit sex scenes. Given that this novel is SJM's first official foray into new adult, I was hoping for at least the same level of explicit sexual content... and I was disappointed. There are two scenes near the end that were nice, but otherwise it was a fairly chaste romance.

The story is still enjoyable, though it feels like there's not enough time spent helping the reader understand the world that this story takes place is. Despite that, I was still eager to keep listening, and finished the book over two days. Narration was great. Good cast of characters. Loved to see a protagonist with parents who are a) alive, b) good people, and c) still active in the protagonist's life.

Slow start, strong finish

It starts off slow but by chapter 6 it gets interesting and the end will leave you wanting more.

Well worth sticking it out through the first few chapters.

Well, I was not sure what to think of this book at first. It was rich in story, politics, environment, and emotions.

I did enjoy the book overall and would recommend it to others.

The intensity between relationships was extreme, deep and heart felt.

There are many characters to follow, and the book switches POV almost every chapter. It is not a fast read as it is so detailed and deep.

A new interesting world had been created. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

The long slow burn...

This book had me pulled in several different directions at onece. I was in a funny head space when I started it, but this read got my attention and kept it. I loved that it wasn't solely from the perspective of the heroine and that there was such a lively mix of types of characters. People you could stand behind and one you will love to hate!

Another wonderful fantasy world to disappear into. I can't wait for the next book.

good start to a Saga

the book was interesting with several twists and turns. The narration was spectacular. I did find the book a little slow at points, but since it was the start of a saga oh, this was expected. All in all, a good read.
