"Are you one of us?" a patient once asked Marsha Linehan, the world-renowned psychologist who developed dialectical behavior therapy. "Because if you were, it would give all of us so much hope." Over the years, DBT had saved the lives of countless people fighting depression and suicidal thoughts, but Linehan had never revealed that her pioneering work was inspired by her own desperate struggles as a young woman. Only when she received this question did she finally decide to tell her story.

The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

People with borderline or narcissistic personality disorders have a serious mental illness that primarily affects their intimate, personal, and family relationships. Often they appear to be normally functioning at work and in public interactions, and narcissists may even be highly effective, in the short term, in some work or social situations. However, in intimate relationships, they can be emotional, aggressive, demeaning, illogical, paranoid, accusing, and controlling - in the extreme.

Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder is a compassionate and informative guide to understanding this profoundly unsettling - and widely misunderstood - mental illness, believed to affect approximately six percent of the general population. Rather than viewing people with BPD as manipulative opponents in a bitter struggle, or pitying them as emotional invalids, Valerie Porr cites cutting-edge science to show that BPD is a true neurobiological disorder and not, as many come to believe, a character flaw or the result of bad parenting.

Description
A revised and updated edition of the best-selling guide to understanding borderline personality disorder.
After more than two decades as the essential guide to borderline personality disorder (BPD), this new edition now reflects the most up- to-date research that has opened doors to the neurobiological, genetic, and developmental roots of the disorder as well as connections between BPD and substance abuse, sexual abuse, post-traumatic stress syndrome, ADHD, and eating disorders.
Both pharmacological and psychotherapeutic advancements point to real hope for success in the treatment and understanding of BPD.
This expanded and revised edition remains as accessible and useful as its predecessor and will reestablish this audiobook as the go-to source for those diagnosed with BPD, their family, friends, and colleagues, as well as professionals and students in the field.
Ce que les critiques en disent
"A book that may save you a lot of time and wasted, misguided pain in dealing with a loved one (with Borderline Personality Disorder)." (SystemsThinker.com)
"A good resource for professionals and families, because it provides therapists with concrete ideas to incorporate both instruction and hope into their practice by providing patients and their families suggestions in simple, non-condescending language. It is by far the best book on the market on BPD." (Anita Biase, StrugglingTeens.com)

The narrator sounds like a machine
I didn’t like the narrator. Not only he sounds like a simulator, he also infantilized all female characters voices.
The book covers the topic well however some of the statements are problematic for me. For example: it was suggested a few times that any other sexuality than heterosexual is a perversion. I did like some aspects of the book. The SET strategy for dealing with a borderline in distress was excellent.

Re-title this to: “I Hate You, Please Leave Me — a Useless Guide to BPD Survivors and Their Loved Ones”
The only useful thing in this drivel is the title—and only because “I hate you, don’t leave me” is a recurring battle those with Borderline Personality Disorder battle regularly.
The author dehumanizes people who need support overcoming, coping, and living with a major mental illness that is estimated to kill 1 out of every 10 BPD-sufferers.
Every reference to “the borderline” instead of a real living person in the anecdotes and unhelpful data provided reminds us how little helpful content has been written by anyone besides Marsha Lineham who has done more groundbreaking research in transforming the lives of those with BPD (or anyone else for that matter) through her research and development of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
Don’t waste your time unless you want to feel hopeless — and if you don’t have this diagnosis, know your BPD loved ones are reminded once again how much content is by people who don’t have Borderline Personality Disorder, but hate someone who does.
Mild appreciation to Mel Foster who managed to somehow make it through recording this garbage and keeping it as clinical a tone as possible without storming out of the recording booth.
