Publisher's Summary

Invasions and sabotage. Two civilizations doing anything to exist. War crimes are the norm.

Joe takes his first step into exile, and is promptly unable to breathe. This new Zone has a higher concentration of power, magnitudes denser. His first task is to survive, but mere survival is the least of his concerns.

The Zone he has landed on has been in a state of constant war for thousands of years, a tug of war between the Elven and Dwarven societies. Not choosing a side is the same as declaring both to be your personal enemy. Though he is resistant, Joe reluctantly decides to go with the group he thinks will help him grow the most - and is instantly plunged into their bitter war. To gain the freedom he desires, Joe needs to turn to the less savory aspects of his class.

Engulfed by darkness, Joe can only hope he’ll be able to snuff out the light.

Author ruined the character

The MC's character development was up and down during the early volumes of the series with its peak in the previous installment "Ruthless" and became intolerable during this installment.

The author somehow managed to gradually turn a relatable and potentially badass retired vet into a annoying and mildly amusing adolescent.

Very disappointing, done with this series.

Middle book syndrome

Very much suffers from the choice of accents that breaks immersion, Even though you can tell the narrator is trying their best.

overall okay, but it lagged during the first several acts. a lot of emphasis on world building which was surprising this late into a series with a lot of retcons. The main protagonist's character is inconsistent.

A bit of a let down...

I was really looking forward to having a new series to listen to, unfortunately this will be the end for me. I understood the main character in the first few books but ever since he was uneven in his stats in the previous book it genuinely feels like someone else is writing this book as the MC has taken a random left turn and stayed on that path. he used to be dedicated and his progress made sense, same with his set backs. now it just feels like the author has tried to make him have ADHD without actually understanding it, he can't remember anything, ever. He's acting more and more like a spoiled child to the point of making irrational demands and throwing tantrums and whining and I'm truthfully surprised he's staying alive which is really only ever due to something happening right before he dies out of sheer luck. and taking in to consideration that stats have completely gone out the window and skills are really the only thing left which he completely keeps messing up I don't even know if he really has any usable skills left and his luck for sure was not high enough to be tripping into success as much as he does.

The story has veered off any logical plot and the main character is no longer even close to logical. nothing even makes sense anymore and any character I liked has been utterly removed and every other characters only purpose is only there in an attempt to push his story along. quests seen extremely random and illogical and I don't even know what he's doing anymore or why. he has little to no motivayion in general and is just running around doing random stuff for no reason unless he's made to actually participate in the "plot" of the story.

not as enjoyable as previous books

one thing I've noticed about this book is that the voices are drastically different. they are cartoonish, to the point that I found them very distracting. Joe himself also sounds very different from previous books.

when it comes to the story, I've gone through the book several times and I still have no idea what's going on. there's just too much happening with too many characters. all the different voices don't make it any easier to work out what's happening.

Kinda...disappointing.

I enjoyed the story overall. And there are many aspects of the story to look forward to. But at this point the mc has kinda 'settled' into their faults... Aka the author ruthlessly abuses them over and over at different parts of the story. And the mc suddenly seems stupid and never able to learn from their repeated mistakes. For some reason the lack of character development is incredibly consistent with this aspect...and maybe I'm being unfair, but every time it happens its a serious detraction to the story at this point. I've kept putting away this audio book and others before/after it to take a break when the mc does something unreasonably and obviously detrimental... Its just frustrating to have a character that has grown so much and while certainly having foibles, being repeatedly abused as stupid in certain regards so the author can make a point or change directions is getting old. Its kinda the same thing that happens with characters repeatedly losing time through some means...the system being completely unpredictable/random. *Author* "I want these events to have happened, this amount of time has unexpectedly passed."

Honestly if you've made it this far its worth toughing out the bad parts...But I'm seriously struggling in the early parts of the next one. In many ways the new aspects introduced are really enjoyable. But the same irritating parts keep getting overused in the story... Its like hey, in case you forgot...in spite of x, y, or z badass thing that the mc has done or experienced, our mc is a moron! And weak! And intimidated! Did I mention he can be dumb!?! Earlier on its like...yeah I could totally have been caught out by that too...now every time something is happening, its like no, pay attention bad things tm are coming. *Ruthlessly abuse the mc the same way since the beginning* and despite that and alleged efforts to prevent things from re-occurring/learning, no, no he didn't learn anything. This is annoying as if we the reader have learned from these mistakes, you'd think actually suffering consequences of the actions might be a bit of a wakeup for person experiencing them. Having faults and foibles is hardly a bad thing, it makes the character more realistic and relatable, but when its ruthlessly abused/exploited over and over to the characters detriment, it just feels contrived when the character can't learn or cope in anyway.

It just feels like the author has settled into the story at this point and despite the opportunities available is just running through the same playbook over and over. Its disappointing to see in some ways.

The performance is pretty spectacular and the narrator has a very wide range. Now that I've listened to enough of the stories he's narrated I do catch some moments when the voices selected have some bleed over, but its hardly common, its startling easy to tell apart almost all of the individual characters who are repeated. Seriously impressive. Really adds to the experience.
