Publisher's Summary

Rebellions are built on hope.

Set in a horrifying near-future United States, 17-year-old Layla Amin and her parents are forced into an internment camp for Muslim American citizens.

With the help of newly made friends also trapped within the internment camp, her boyfriend on the outside, and an unexpected alliance, Layla begins a journey to fight for freedom, leading a revolution against the internment camp's director and his guards.

Heart-racing and emotional, Internment challenges listeners to fight complicit silence that exists in our society today.

"A riveting and cautionary tale. Internment urges us to speak up and speak out, to ask questions and demand answers, and when those answers prove unsatisfactory, to resist." (Stacey Lee, award-winning author of Outrun the Moon)

What the critics say

"Taking on Islamophobia and racism in a Trump-like America, Ahmed's magnetic, gripping narrative written in a deeply humane and authentic tone, is attentive to the richness and complexity of the social ills at the heart of the book." (Kirkus, starred review)

"[A] poignant, necessary story that paints a very real, very frank picture of hatred and ignorance, while also giving readers and marginalized individuals hope." (Booklist, starred review)

"An unsettling and important book for our times." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

Important read

The premise of the book is complex and incredibly important for us to read and understand. There were parallels to history that made parts of the book raw and real, easy to imagine oneself in that spot. The execution of overall story was too focused on the love story rather than the rebellion and the reality of the situation, which gave an seemingly unrealistic response to their internment. Samira did a great job of portraying how complacency of the general population can aide in persecution of specific group throughout time. All in all, I think this is an incredibly important book for young adults to read

Nice

C’était très réaliste et le sujet est bien traité mais la fin semblais un peu rusher et les personnages sont as assez développés

Very relevant

The plot was well developed up until the end, which I felt was a little rushed. Otherwise, the story is ever so à propos, as well as a cautionary tale.
Great for discussing demagoguery and the abuse of power with our passionate youth.
