Description

Reidon Ward will become a god.

He doesn't know it yet, of course. Reidon was born weak, sickly, and small. Afflicted with a painful disease and abandoned by his parents because of it, he has had to fight tooth and nail for every minor advantage life has allowed him.

However, his perseverance has not gone unnoticed, and when the most powerful artificial intelligence in human history takes an interest in him, things began to change quickly. Granted a CAD—a Combat Assistance Device—with awful specs but an infinite potential for growth, Reidon finds himself at the bottom of his class at the Galens Institute, one of the top military academies in the Collective. Along with his best friend, Viviana Arada, Reidon will have to start his long climb through the school rankings and on to the combat tournament circuits that have become humanity's greatest source of excitement and entertainment.

So begins the rise of a god. So begins the ascent of the Stormweaver.

Fun progressive fiction.

This book had some struggles with dialogue and plot. The conversations were often too quippy or full of exposition, and though I expect some of that in every sci-fi or fantasy novel, there were a couple a moments that were too much. Some of it was done pretty well - the nerd trope that two of the main characters have going on gives a reason to be well-versed and informative for the reader and can mask a lot of exposition dumps, but at some points it becomes a crutch. I hope the sequel will lighten up on this.
The plot was predictable at all stages, but I didn't pick this up to be wowed by spectacular plot twists - I picked it up because Space Cyborg Ninja Fights and I got that, damn it. It was a fun romp through campus life, and watching Rei get stronger and try to outhink problems was great popcorn lit. The book does leave us with some dangling plot threads I expect to be woven into a more cohesive pattern when book 2 arrives, whenever that will be.
Luke Daniels did a great job of keeping the voices distinct and engaging, and I think his performance was top-notch.
All in all, if you want something low stakes but fun, you could do worse than Iron Prince. I enjoyed it enough that I'll pick up book 2 when it releases.

So good I wish I hadn't looked at the cover art.

A massive surprise. Combining everything I love about anime, LitRPG's, and YA characters. With so much potential for an amazing long running series, plot hooks, and genuinely likeable personalities... I can't wait to start the next one.

Just read

Story is told smoothly full of action, twists, and yuks making you hesitant to pause or fall asleep. And the other comments seem to agree! My only complaint is there isn’t more to the series.

Pretty good start

Great start to the series, ill definitely be picking up the next book.

HOWEVER. The story itself is not really original. Your typical started from the bottom school progression story, staring the best friend, the school bully, the forbidden love interest, the teacher, the angry teacher, the rival...yeah you get the picture. The characters themselves arent particularly interesting. I understand their motivations but i didnt find that any of them (including the main) stand out to me.
The narrator is a bit too BREATHY and dramatic at times, it can make some scenes a bit silly and uncomfortable.
The fights can be drawn out and certain parts can be over detailed, several times i found myself spacing out DURING fight scenes. Yikes.
Its better than *Sufficiently Advanced Magic* but not as good as *Cradle*

Still great.

cool system idea

The created system makes for alot of range and some good examples thoughout of the varying classes. Good use of medical knowledge and empathy. Solid grasp of advances and some good twists and turns, hoping the series continues the trend

Amazing Book. Promising Series

I have to say as an avid listener of LitRPG's this book was a refreshing way at a level progression system, not too much stats and numbers and a solid hero story to cheer for as you listen, Ray overcomes all odds to become the Iron Prince.
Love it cant wait for the rest of these amazing books. I would even say its a contender with He Who Fights With Monsters.

Decent writing, but narrator is meh

The world building is pretty novel, dialogue is ok, and characters seem to have decent depth so far. The narrator makes the voices kinda whiney though

Eazy read with a few annoying moments

I had some trouble trying to finish this book. It's immature and lacks any substance focusing on punches and weird noises. The mc is supposed to be a smart kid but repeatedly takes 30s to wrap his head around the most casual things happening to him. Or he rushes to open the door and puts on a jacket but doesn't wear pants. Mickey Mouse level in the best moments ranging to pretty annoying at times. A bunch of unnecessary cliffhangers leave you waiting for unimportant or predictable information.
The narrator can produce 2 voices, a normal male voice and a 50 year old heavy smoker voice with a Scottish accent. So every character in the book sounds about the same, girls, boys, kids, old people. Until you get to remember the names it's impossible to distinguish between them.
I'm not buying another one. I would have rated it lower but I gave it 3* because I feel like it could be appealing to 9 year olds and also because I read worse.
