Publisher's Summary

John Dies at the End is a genre-bending, humorous account of two college drop-outs inadvertently charged with saving their small town—and the world—from a host of supernatural and paranormal invasions.

Stop.

You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands.

No, don’t put it down. It’s too late. They’re watching you.

My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you’ll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it’s too late. You touched the book. You’re in the game. You’re under the eye.

The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why? You just have to trust me.

The important thing is this: the drug is called Soy Sauce, and it gives users a window into another dimension. John and I never had the chance to say no. You still do.

I’m sorry to have involved you in this, I really am. But as you read about these terrible events and the very dark epoch the world is about to enter as a result, it is crucial you keep one thing in mind: none of this was my fault.

not for me

If you would enjoy reading 360-odd pages of disjointed first person narration by an insufferable douchebag, this is the book for you.
I have no idea why this book was so popular. I picked it up as an audible 3 buck special, thinking it might be ok to pass the time at work. I probably would have been better off just listening to music.
A loosely connected series of outlandish events that never quite manage to be either funny or exciting, peopled with a cast of really, really annoying characters. Apparently being annoying is the same as having a personality? I wouldn't have cared if John actually DID die at the end.
And poor David was unrelentingly, grindingly douchey.
It was touted as a dark comedy, which sounds like fun, except it's not actually funny. I got one brief "heh!" out of it, and it was a poop joke.
I'm just glad I only paid the sale price.

Sometimes Gross, Frequently Excellent

The narrator is exceptionally talented and engaging - I cannot stress enough how much Stephen R. Thorne made the listening experience for me. The book itself is likely to surprise a genuine laugh out of the listener. Occasionally it gets pretty gross, often it gets pretty weird, but the jokes and off-the-wall concepts come so hard and so fast that even if it misses sometimes, it's bound to find a hit sooner than you can prepare yourself for it. The characters rapidly become more likeable and endearing than you expect from the book's outset and amongst the general insanity, there are ideas and elements of worldbuilding that are genuinely interesting and make you crave more. An absolutely singular listening experience; it definitely made long drives to work less boring. #Audible1

Gruesomely good fun!

This book is perfect for people who have a very odd brand of humor and who aren’t afraid of a little (or a lot) of gore.

The main characters are deeply flawed but incredibly engaging, and the story manages to draw you in and take you on a wild ride through the absurd reality of this world.

Weird but great

It was little weird but in a complex smart thought out way and with some plots twists I had never seen coming and some I only realised about a good minute before they were reviled I dislike how when ever I used audible my computer became a black screen and the audio would continue like why wouldn't my screen continue to be on like youtube but whatever what you need to know is its a weird but amazing story

Amazingly Wacky!

Crazy nonstop insanity. I loved it. The Characters are amazing. The story is pretty wacky, but you can't help but laugh. If your a fan of the Horror comedy genre, don't miss this book.

Random, long winded and aimless

I loved David Wong's "14" but this book was a tiring, juvenile ramble-fest that seemed to be made up as the story went along. I've read better stories from middle-school students. Very disappointed...

ending is bad but book was ok

this book was recommended to me. it was a different type of style for me. it's an interesting plot and gives twist and turns throughout the book
narrator was young and goes with the storyline. he kept up the tone and kept a good tempo throughout.
didn't like the ending but it's overall a good book. would recommend

Woah..

I am equal parts Amazed, Baffled, and strangely Satisfied. Incredibly imaginative with a great pay off.

A fun time

I have a lot of audiobooks but John Dies at the End is one of the few I listen to the end. It's funny and sometimes scary and I really enjoyed it.

This is a great effing book!

This book is Kurt Vonnegut mixed with Stephen King and Christopher Moore, making for a highly entertaining story that balances subversive dark absurdist humour mixed with genuinely disturbing and otherworldly horror.
