When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional. But what if, Gamache begins to ask himself, she was perfectly sane?
When a body is found, the terms of the bizarre will suddenly seem less peculiar and far more menacing.
But it isn’t the only menace Gamache is facing.
The investigation into what happened six months ago - the events that led to his suspension - has dragged on, into the dead of winter. And while most of the opioids he allowed to slip though his hands, in order to bring down the cartels, have been retrieved, there is one devastating exception.

Louise Penny never disappoints
This is a series that always entertains and is able to sustain a feel-good sense for the reader without dumbing down the writing. Thank you to Louise Penny. Love the British RP narration

Good story as are all from this author
The book is longer than it needs to be. Due in part to the writer’s habit of repeating the same thing, three ways. In my mind I am saying: “Yeah, I got it already!” My opinion only. Anyone else notice this? All the same, Louise Penny weaves a great story and I’d like to move to Three Pines even though it’s a most dangerous village. Now I start the next one!

Narrator
Excellent narrator BUT after listening to the series, I must agree with others that the ‘errors’ made in pronunciation are starting to make the audible experience less pleasing. The mispronounced word (French) make it difficult to understand what is being read. I love this series but wish the choice of narrator had been more thoughtful. You would think that part of the preparation would include a review of how to pronounce certain words. I have listened to the interviews between Louise Penny and the narrators and they seem to have had a good exchange but I wish she would have given consideration to requesting that the French words be pronounced differently (even with the English/British accent).

Creative plot twists and interesting perspectives
This latest Penny novel contains some interesting takes on the fentanyl crisis and the challenges for police authorities. The plot is creative, a significant achievement given the number of the Gamache mysteries she has produced. For long time readers, some of the folksy narratives of Three Pines and its quirky inhabitants will be a bit tireseome but fortunately those parts are kept to a tolerable minimum. Some of the rogue cop, evil Surete themes may also be getting a bit threadbare but still retain an air of credibility given the very public problems within police enforcement agencies.

Twists and Turns
A wonderful read once again. Fresh mystery with twists and turns and various plots at the same time. I also love the interjection of humour from the 3 Pines group especially Ruth and the descriptions of meals! I can smell, see, hear and taste this delicious series. Thank you Louise Penny and your choice of narrator, Robert Bathurst who has taken up the mantle from your previous narrator, who was also excellent! Can hardly wait for the next book!
