Publisher's Summary

From a New York Times best-selling and Hugo award-winning author comes a modern masterwork of science fiction, introducing a captain, his crew, and a detective as they unravel a horrifying solar system wide conspiracy that begins with a single missing girl.

Humanity has colonized the solar system - Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond - but the stars are still out of our reach.

Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, the Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for - and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.

Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to the Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.

Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations - and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the Universe.

A Worthwhile Series

I specifically prefer a story with many long books in the series. I've just completed the entire Expanse series and came back to review this first book to say that it is a great series. I switch between fantasy and Sci-Fi, and while this first book I only gave 4/5 on the storyline....the remaining seven books are all a 5. This is one of those series you are sad to finish because now I am struggling to find a new one.

Good Old Fashioned Sci Fi

This is a thoroughly enjoyable science fiction tale of the future that is not based on the current, ever-popular dystopia. There is science, future generations, evil corporations, alien technology, off-world living, murder, mayhem, and mystery. It is one of the best science fiction books I have "read" in a long time. The voice talent reading this book does an excellent job.

Fantastic narrator and great story!

Jefferson Mays was a fantastic narrator and made this a really great listen. The story was compelling and its characters were genuine and likeable. I would recommend this production to anyone looking for a space opera that will provide them with many hours of enjoyment!

It came from outer space

As I began to reread this novel, I once again got out my old, old game about interplanetary war, and realized I couldn't put the book down nor play the game solitaire. I haven't even finished the series!
It's so good! Even if there had not been a TV adaptation, it would be compelling!

Great plot, great performance, creepy characters

Really enjoyed the story but spent a lot of time yelling at the sexist main characters. It's worth it in the end because the following books do not have this problem but continue to have excellent plotlines and the characters improve entirely.

Modern Sci-Fi masterpiece.

Leviathan Wakes is an absolute breath of fresh air compared to the piles of generic sci-fi being released currently.

The first book in the expanse series sets up a near future landscape with an intense political triangle as well as cast of interesting and compelling characters working to solve a mystery that spans our solar system and more.

Absolutely a treat to listen to. #Audible1

excellent characterization

I watched the series before reading the books, and was interested to see the differences between the two. Season one followed this book fairly closely. The book uses two main point of view characters to tell the story. Very well written and performed.
