Description

Michael Crichton, the New York Times best-selling author of Jurassic Park, returns to the world of paleontology in this recently discovered novel - a thrilling adventure set in the Wild West during the golden age of fossil hunting.

The year is 1876. Warring Indian tribes still populate America's western territories, even as lawless gold-rush towns begin to mark the landscape. In much of the country, it is still illegal to espouse evolution. Against this backdrop two monomaniacal paleontologists pillage the Wild West, hunting for dinosaur fossils while surveilling, deceiving, and sabotaging each other in a rivalry that will come to be known as the Bone Wars.

Into this treacherous territory plunges the arrogant and entitled William Johnson, a Yale student with more privilege than sense. Determined to survive a summer in the west to win a bet against his archrival, William has joined world-renowned paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh on his latest expedition. But when the paranoid and secretive Marsh becomes convinced that William is spying for his nemesis, Edwin Drinker Cope, he abandons him in Cheyenne, Wyoming, a locus of crime and vice. William is forced to join forces with Cope and soon stumbles upon a discovery of historic proportions. With this extraordinary treasure, however, comes exceptional danger, and William's newfound resilience will be tested in his struggle to protect his cache, which pits him against some of the West's most notorious characters.

Drawing on both meticulously researched history and an exuberant imagination, Dragon Teeth is based on the rivalry between real-life paleontologists Cope and Marsh; in William Johnson listeners will find an inspiring hero only Michael Crichton could have imagined. Perfectly paced and brilliantly plotted, this enormously winning adventure is destined to become another Crichton classic.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Scott Brick is a narrator at the top of his game, and this is a meaty tale for him to get his - well, teeth - into....A compelling listen - and one that will leave the listener feeling pleasantly educated as well as entertained." ( AudioFile)

Great storytelling!

Now one of my favourite Crichton books! The genre was not what I was expecting, but I think that just made the story all the more enjoyable!

I enjoyed it more than I expected

Based on some of the reviews, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Simple entertainment with some interesting historical facts blended in. Worth a listen if you are looking for a quick, entertaining, listen.

A great perspective of the western frontier

A good read, I felt the unknown struggles of what being a scientist in a lawless land might feel like.

Keeps you thinking of what will happen

Was a awesome story. I did think the first half was a little slow but the last half made up for it 10x over.

One of Crichton's Weaker Efforts

This is an enjoyable book but.. to be honest.. kinda boring. The imagined events surrounding this legendary real-life rivalry between pioneering Paleontologists are well-conceived, punctilliously researched, and admirably written (Michael Crichton muses about a fictional scholarly undertaking that evolves into a captivating adventure set in the post-Civil War American Wild West during the Indian Wars).. but this offering almost reads like a 'Travel Book' - designed to introduce readers to exotic locales that few ever saw (e.g Deadwood, South Dakota) and dropping famous names (e.g. Wyatt Earp) - but little else. Crichton proposes what it might have been like to go on a bonehunting expedition in the cutthroat early days that preceeded the development of a new branch of science.. but nothing (other than some famous settings and characters) is terribly unexpected.

Bottom Line: 'Dragon Teeth' is recognizable as a Crichton novel but lacks the fireworks and speculative imaginings that fans are used to.

Scott Brick's performance on this project is exactly what listeners familiar with him have come to expect - impressive but unspectacular. Luckily, the drawbacks in his delivery (drawling diction, somewhat bored nasal tone, and an occasionally odd cadence) are softened somewhat by setting playback speed on the Audible player at 1.15X (I actually recommend the technique every time you encounter him). Still, Brick was a great casting choice from HarperAudio.

I personally think Crichton is at his best when taking solidly plausible science and developing a fantastical plot around it. This book doesn't do that - rather providing strikingly true-to-life conjecture in the milleu of a painstakingly accurate setting (with a little bit of Science thrown in). The book is certainly entertaining, but I can't give it more than 6.5 out of 10 stars. If you're an existing Crichton afficianado, this is definitely worth a download, but his other works are far better options for your Credit. Those new to him should *definitely* start with something else.
